Where to climb near Asheville?

I will be heading to Asheville the third week of July.  Where is the closest/best place to climb some moderate grades (5.10ds and under) sport and/or trad? Anything I need to know before heading to the area you are recommending? Thank you for your help!

About how far of a drive would you guess it is to Looking Glass?

It's really hot that time of year.   Your options will be somewhat limited.   The drives from Asheville to climbing are 1-2 hours, even in prime weather.  For the finicky summer months, you are looking at having to go further than that.  Head north for sandstone sport, and for trad head to north-facing cliffs such as Moore's and Ship Rock.

North Side of Looking Glass, Ship Rock, and Hawksbill Mountain are going to be your best bets in July. The North Side of LG will be much cooler, and the climbing there is far superior to the rest of the mountain anyway IMO.

North side of Cedar Rock / Stone Depot is ok in the morning

North Side of the Glass (1 hour)
Ship Rock, Little Wilson (1:30 or so)
Hawksbill or chase shade at Table Rock (1:30 or so as well)

Bring your rack as except for the middle tier at Hawksbill these are all trad areas. Ship might be your best bet, lots of great routes there at the grade you're looking for.

Anywhere in boone--especially ship rock--will be okay. (The dump, moon rocks, sunken treasure, little wilsons). Hawksbill is primo in the summer--esp mornings and evenings--and has the most classic 5.10 in the area: lost in space. See this week's weekend whipper to get one perspective of the route, haha.
