Thank you Nate, appreciate your support. Was thinking about maybe doing one of these again for everyone but this makes me think twice .

Ignore'em. Pro, not pro. Who cares? You and participants let a lucky one have some gear for a fraction of the price. That is what counts.

You have a great point you don't have to play if you don't want. And you don't have to bash others that do or try to put things on like this for orhers. It just boils down to respect . Thanks

I thought it was cool and would probably play again. My only suggestion would be posting a video of drawing the numbers.

I agree with everyone. I have been looking into YouTube to streaming a live drawing at a certain time that all those who had tickets could watch. I think it will make for a better experience for everyone. The other options I thought is to have some random person select numbers . Let me know if you guys have any suggestions ? This last drawing I used an app that randomly selects numbers. It worked well except I would have preferred that those playing could have seen it live . I can't just record it because I could easily just record it over and over again with different results. That's one of the reason I would want it live or for someone else to pick random number . Any ideas ?

Climb80 should explain a few things before taking anyone else's money for another "raffle."

Climb80 started the raffle on Friday and was accepting entry money until Saturday afternoon. Saturday afternoon Climb80 announced that "Don B" who lives in Gardena, CA was the winner. Later, Climb80 posted that he'd shipped the rope on "Saturday the 26th" (Saturday was the 24th but presumably that's a typo) to Don B.

Monday morning the 26th, before noon, Don B posted a picture of a rope he said he'd received from Climb80 to prove the auction was legit.

Climb80 lives in Washington State, near Tacoma. Don B lives in Southern California. To overnight a box as big as a rope from WA to CA departing Saturday afternoon with Monday morning delivery costs more than $100. Which seems excessive for a rope won in a raffle.

How'd that work? How did a rope that Climb80 said was in his possession on Saturday afternoon in WA get to Gardena California by Monday morning?

This is exactly what I'm sick off. People that assume they KNOW IT ALL. I'm sorry but you are being a jerk and I will just come out and say it.

  1. The raffle ended on Friday the 23rd
  2. The rope was packed and shipped the next day the 24th at the cost of $20.89 ( might have put the wrong date )
  3. Don has not received the rope, he was only posting the picture that I sent him showing the rope was packed and real.
  4. Again it only cost me $20.89 to ship which I checked with Don before sending to make sure he was okay with the price ( he paid me $20 via paypal)
  5. Posted a picture of my receipt and everything. I don't know any of the winner.

I can't believe there are people out there that put this much effort into bashing others.

Climb 80, I wouldn't blame you at all if you didn't do another raffle on here because of these total idiots! But if you ever want to get something like this going again count me in. You have my email now right?

Are these ppl really serious....?

The timestamps on the thread say 3 days ago which is Saturday. But the people who PayPal you know whether it was Friday or Saturday. Fair enough.

Still seems curious to spend $270 + another $27 in sales tax on a rope only to raffle it immediately for $260 worth of $13 "entries." By that math you've lost $37 from the beginning plus a locker and a $6.50 refund to some guy you say you need permission from to Paypal him $6.50. Which also doesn't add up.

Also seems odd that someone would post a picture you sent him as proof of anything.

I think this kind of raffle would be a great way to scam a bunch of people out of a small enough amount of money that they're not going to create a big fuss. There are a dozen ways it can work. Maybe I'm wrong and you really are Santa Claus. I just don't believe it.

This thread is very interesting.   I think the raffle is a cool idea.   It's like the internet version of a climbing club selling tickets at a function and someone wins some gear, etc.   Fun, harmless, and you might win.

Of course, as anything, it could be a scam.   But if you feel that way, just move along and don't get involved.

Warning!!!!  All MP member watch out for HalfDomer he Is a scammer just trying to get your info!!

He/she is a brand new member joining only last month and is just trying to get your info. They tried contacting me on a post I was selling just to get some of my personal info asking random questions. Now they are trying to bash me on a post for apparently being to nice and transparent.

Be extremely carful.

I've bought gear from climb80 before and he's legit and been more responsible and responsive than anyone else I've bought gear from. Get off your crusade and don't participate if you don't want to.

I think these raffles are a fun idea, but they are unfortunately illegal.  Per the Washington State Gambling Commission website, individuals and commercial businesses cannot offer raffles.  I'm surprised Mountain Project is allowing these to continue.

IIRC, Nick questioned Climb80 about the origin of all the new gear he/she is selling.

This was on one of C80s sale threads. Eventually Nick deleted all his questions, and C80 kept selling, fwiw.

I am curious how C80 has all this brand new gear to sell.

But I retired from the MP posse comitatus when the Free Gear thread went to hell and the Community forum went underground and just don't give a shit what happens around here any more.

Climb80 did try to contact me about 3rd place prize I’m just to irresponsible to check my email.  Seems like a legit dude trying to keep mountain project fun to me. +1 on being in for another raffle.

Hey Mike can you send me your PayPal ? I tried to send it friends and family and it would let me. I will try again and send you a screenshot of the error message if it checks out again.

As far as doing another raffle probably never again. I have had a lot of great support but this is ridiculous and has been taking away from my family. It's really to bad because I was thinking about doing another for this upcoming holiday and try to do a live stream on Youtube . Originally I got nothing but great feedback but after all these comments I don't know.

As far as being illegal, I have no idea if it is or isn't in WA or if it is illegal on a web site such as MP. Like I said saw another do this and it seemed fun for everyone so thought I would give it a try.

I don’t blame you, it’s a shame we all can’t get along, if you don’t mind I feel I missed my shot on 3rd place prize and would be stoaked if you picked a new 3rd place winner.

Sure thing I will post on the original post the third place winner then. Thanks for letting me know Mike.

This is a pretty cool idea.  I wouldn't stress over the witch hunt.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again-- the admins should really stop allowing raffles on this site...

1) raffles that are not for charity are illegal in about 6 states.

2) there is no way to prevent fraud in this sort of raffle.

3) The reason for having a marketplace on mountainproject is to enable climbers to get rid of gear they no longer use/didn't fit/etc... It is not supposed to be a platform for e-businesses.

best,

matt
