Last time I was at lost wall I noticed there was supposed to be a second way to get to the clifline that was much further out past the initial bunch of routes (I'm assuming at one of the other cutbacks on along the drive in). Anyone know anything about this and if the climbing that far back is clean enough/ worth going there?
There are some good climbs back there. Not tons, but enough to keep you happy if you're looking for something new or off the beaten path.
The Netherworld gully is hard to find from the top, and usually crawling with poison ivy. It's definitely a faster way to get down there, but not very nice. As you drive up the road past the normal trailhead parking, after a few more switchbacks you'll find yourself on a long, relatively straight stretch that goes for at least a quarter mile or so. At this point you're basically driving alongside the top of Lost Wall. Somewhere as you go along there's a pullout on the left side, and a faint trail heads down from there. The problem is that the pullout is hard to identify. I haven't been that way in years, and I'm not sure I could identify it even if I was staring right at it. Once you hit the hairpin back to the right at the end of the straightaway, you'll know you've gone too far.
For your first time, it might be simpler just to hike in from the regular trailhead. Then at the end of the day send one guy up the gully to wait at the top while the other person hikes the bottom trail back to the car. Then drive up and pick up the guy at the top of the gully. Now you'll know exactly where it is, and what your options are if you ever want to go back.
The netherworld is the area you are referring to, it does have some great routes, though they do not get near the amount of traffic as a lot of other routes closer to the main parking area. There is another trail in that does cut a lot of the walking out, however the parking for it is very nondescript and the trail may or may not be in good shape, it follows a seasonal drainage down to the start of the area.
I am biased, but there are a lot more good routes in the Netherworld than the main area, however, the issue with LW has always been that it is low on the ridge and gets lots of run off and therefore dirt and the stuff that wants to grow in the dirt. No guarantees on how clean things will be, especially since it's been 10+ years since I moved north. Dunno that I would want to mess with the permits and BS now anyway. We used to just camp wherever we wanted and do whatever wanted whenever we wanted. Ain't government grand.
As you drive along the side of the ridge the road will make a little jink left, and there will be a culvert underneath. Immediately there should be a pull out on the left, but again, it's been ten years. We used to have a pretty well maintained trail down the drainage, crossing over to skiers left and down that slope back into the drainage near the bottom, but I guess climbers are lazy and few go back there anymore.
