All the fixed draws were removed this year from the Gallery, Trophy, Secret 13, and probably other areas -- Anyone know the story behind it? Also this year, piles of used fixed draws showed up in the Infectious Cave in Trader Joe's and Whole Food's paper bags with a note "Climbers, Afix as you see fit"? Probably a related story? Seems a strange coincidence. Some people curious if it's the BLM/Forest Service (doubt it), disgruntled locals, do-gooder locals ... all various theories have been floated. Just trying to get to the bottom of it, heard lots of people curious about it. It'd just be good to know what's going on and why.

Were the draws left in the Infectious Cave the same ones that were removed from Red Rocks? If so then that’s really bizarre.

I have nothing to add other than I noticed in February a couple of the fixed draws there were starting to get pretty worn.

So, some local climber stole all the fixed draws in Red Rock, a few of them were dropped off at the hood, the rest of them are probably sitting in someone's garage right now, and no one has any idea who did it. Is that where we're at? Does no one know what happened?

I saw the bags of fixed draws in the Infectious cave back in July, but I didn't realize there was a controversy about it. Have you talked with those who maintain the fixed gear in the NV area (John Wilder comes to mind)? Maybe they removed the old gear because it was worn and had plans to replace it but haven't gotten around to it.

John Wilder wrote:As the local ASCA guy, the only thing I maintain in Red Rock are the bolts. I don't touch perma-draws. I can also say that if/when I make plans to mess with a cliff like the Gallery for bolt replacement, I plaster notices everywhere (online, at the shops, gyms, etc), to let people know the plan. If any aspect falls through, I make damn sure I leave the cliff as I found it. If I did deem a perma draw unsafe, I would post on this site and notify as many people as possible that I removed it and I would make every effort to replace it as quickly as possible. Like most of the locals around, I heard about the Gallery draws going missing sometime early this past summer and then them showing up at the Hood one day. No idea who did it- certainly not me. Whoever did it had to be pretty industrious to slog up to those cliffs, fix lines, pull all of those draws, then haul all that weight back to their car, then slog it up to the Infectious Cave- seems like a crap ton of work to me. Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that you stole them or removed them. I just meant to suggest if they were removed for a legitimate purpose, then I'd imagine you'd know why since, among other things, you seem to be the local ASCA guy.
