Absolute shit since update

I recently broke my phone and had to download the new app on the new phone. God, it's awful!! It's so bad that if there was any competition whatsoever, I'd use it and ditch MP forever.

Here is my list of problems

-Have to download a whole state now. What the fuck, between CO, UT, and CA, that's all the available space on a low end phone. Should I have to buy a $500+ phone for a free app to work right?

-If my screen times out, I have to start over. This is true if I'm looking at a route. This sucks because most areas are several sub categories deep. So I have to go all the way through to get to the area again. Absolute bullshit and you know it. It should stay on the last screen I looked at until I either go back or click forward. This also happens in the forums. If I'm in the middle of typing "STFU n00b!!" on the forums but have to put the phone down for a minute, everything gets lost now. This didn't happen on the old app, I know, I've typed STFU noob a lot.

-The back arrow on all android devices should function as a back button. If you hit this button now, again, you have to start over.

It's shinier than the old app. It's much worse functionally though.

  1. I noticed Back button tonight, thought it was just me.
  2. I can't update an area I already had. I have taken it off twice and started over to no avail.

Edit: I uninstalled the app until it is fixed. I don't want to dowload a whole state instead of updated an area I had. I can't even get to what I had. :/

Totally agree-- I would suggest that, each time you open the app, have it re-open to the last route you were looking at.

I think bookmark has come back. I got an alert about it last time I used the route database

Huh. Are you sure this is a universal thing? Doesn't happen to me on my Android. Otherwise, I 100% agree. Hate accidentally hitting the back button and being forced to go all the way back down the rabbit hole to get where I was...

Anyone else have major issues with the in-app map? Used to be super easy to pop to their map and see all the other areas real quick and at least a little visual on where they are. Now it's a huge hassle and the GPS doesn't always work, which is pretty important when you're in the middle of nowhere. Switching it to the Google map is even worse and it "found" us maybe once. Was super frustrating and a bummer when that's what we've often relied on when we knew we were close but still needed some guidance. The Android app is for sure not on my good list right now.

Instead of being able to download all pictures from an entire area like Joshua Tree, now you have to do it for individual walls/boulders area because "the download is too large"

I used to download the larger area all in one sweep and call it a day. Sucks when we have a change of plans only to find that I missed an area and we have no pictures to navigate with.

The back button probably being the biggest miss and seemingly the easiest/quickest to fix.

I'm just in general not a huge fan... I mean, they made it "prettier" but in doing so, they eliminated the features that it seems like most of us climbers use the most. I honestly don't care if the thing is pretty, I want it easy and not huge on the memory usage so that I can whip it out when scrambling around out of any kind of cell service to help locate a hidden wall or try and route map once I'm there. The pictures seem to work fine for me when I do the Download All photos when you view an entire area; but I haven't tried doing a massive location like Joshua since we're a bit more focused on the less "popular" spots. The GPS failure was a HUGE issue for us and almost ruined our first day of climbing. "Near Me" should automatically show what's actually near me, not the entire country and then I have to focus in and spend a lot of time navigating around the map to find what I'm looking for. The old way of just getting to an area or individual wall in the app, then clicking on the map and having everything nearby show up in an easy, fast loading map was awesome and made for some of our best climbing days of "Oh, we're hella close to this place, let's head there since this wall we're at is totally blown out"

I totally agree with everything that has been said here.  My biggest issues in order of annoyance are as follows:

1. have to download a whole state, I was even annoyed with the old app because I'd have to download the whole Wasatch front area instead of sub areas in UT.  This is just worse, I should be able to download anything from the lowest level of area all the way up to the whole state if I want to.

2. can't download photos for a whole area becasue "download is too large".  I know I have plenty of space available on the phone, and that I have plenty of data available, why is it up to the app to decide how much I can download or not?

3. not being able to use the back button is just ridiculous.

classic lists for specific area gone?!?

Interesting - I actually overall liked it better. A few small bugs & annoyances have been dealt with. The behavior about navigation is a little peculiar, but if you just take like a climbing day to actually use it and understand how it works, instead of just bitching about it, you'll be able to use it effectively.

I think part of the complains here are more plain ol' resistance to change!

It doesn't matter what they call Rule #1. They know, you know, and I know that Rule #1 for every website is function. If it doesn't work right, people go elsewhere. There is no place for high minded ideals when there are no people.

Those are all extremely valid and correct criticisms of the new app. There is nothing violating rule #1.

Those here complaining have taken days, weeks, months to use the app. We understand it well. It still sucks. I imagine that I'm not alone in that this app is the first app I load when I get a new phone. It's not resistance to change. It's poor design.

If the app could be moved to a memory card, I could still use it. Facebook allows this. But alas, this app does not. So I uninstalled it from my whimpy Samsung On 5.

Concur with all the criticism of the new app.  It's a shame.  I wonder what the motivation was on REI's part?

I'll be deleting it as well and I'll take my chances with screenshots from the web page.

I just saved the link to the website on my home screen (iOS). Deleting the app. This works better

Right of course - swipe left & right in a endless, unordered gallery of pictures is going to be much, much better. Of course - actually you know what they should change the download on Google Play & instead to put there a bunch of screenshots.

This is kind of what I mean - this thread radiates bad faith....
