Just leave your dog at home

There I said it.  Please respect the environment and others.  Leave the dang dog at home.  Or if you can't leave it at home because you need such emotional support, get a therapist and don't get a dog.

Why?...Because the next time somebodies unattended dog tries to charge me as I approach a climb I will act accordingly to protect myself.  This may lead to injury of someones unattended dog. As an example, just trying to get around a dog at the base of Castleton Tower I had to kick & punch a dog in the head to avoid getting bit.   So don't get all butt hurt because I am using strong language here, mature as a climber and be aware of all users in the area.

Or a therapist ... may be both.

I love dogs but feel the same way, if you can’t tend to your dog leave him home.

I'm so happy we're discussing a new topic that's never appeared before on MP.

Sounds like the dog acted aggressive and you handled it. No dog owner is gonna get upset because you put the dog in its place.  Probably should have been on a leash.  Sorry it encroached on your safe space bro.

Dogs have a good sense of character.  Maybe all these bad occurrences with dogs are clues that you have emotional issues. It may take many years of therapy, but there is hope that you can change the disturbing emotional issues going on inside of you.  Then you should get a dog and be happy like the rest of us

I wish I could agree, but there are too many owners who love their little furball so much and can't fathom that it could do any wrong. They're not going to accept it if your foot finds its way to the dog's throat.   I also know there are some dogs - not many IME - who behave toward others in a way that is totally out of character vis-a-vis the dog's family demeanor.

I didn't realize that dogs were climbing gear.

I'd like to see less dogs at the crag, and more unattended children. Dogs are boring, they just sniff around a little and lay about with their adopted families. Kids on the other hand are exciting, they make all these wonderfully creative noises, and play games like tag, that include your belayer when you least expect it, or hide and seek, using your equipment as the force field protecting them from their cute little adorable siblings. Gosh. Kids. Who doesn't want more of them around?

What if someone shows up at the crag with an unruley dog, playing loud music and immediately throws a banana peel on the ground, cracks a cold beer, lights a cigarette and onsights and wicked 5.7 all the while shouting at the belayer, CLIPPING, CLIPPING, OK YOU CAN TAKE ME OFF BELAY, NO I SAID OFF BELAY, READY TO BE LOWERED!!!!! DO YOU WANT ME TO CLEAN THE DRAWS?

What if the dog is listening to music by itself?

Is this a standard example of interaction on M proj?  No wonder I shy from social media for the most part....I did/do have higher expectations of climbers as far as what I experience in the real world.. C'mon ....Be excellent to eachother.

I think this is the website you're looking for... http://www.supertopo.com/

I hear they're much more civil over there.

Has there been any discussion around the best type of shoe to wear while kicking an aggressive dog? I am asking because I am looking for the number to rocknresoles and  worried my normal shoes might not work.

What you're seeing in this thread has nothing to do with MP interaction or climbers being excellent to each other and everything to do with a topic that has been discussed to death dozens/hundreds of times, with possibly thousands of pages, with still no resolutions and often the same people on either side of the dog fence.

I like their dog...

I just don't like drones, crag babies, sketchy anchors, loud music at the crag, toxic masculinity or retailers that don't have socks my size!!! : (

I always leave my dog at home, and there are sometimes I take my kid with me. Why? Because I can control my kid, but my dog is an excitable little fuck that thinks every human needs her kisses when they don't. There are other dogs I encounter that are no problem, and other kids I encounter that are no problem. Honestly, I'm a bit confused on the whole dog and kids need to go home stuff because I just don't see the same issues others are seeing (obviously a dog attack is a big issue as is a kid distracting a belayer), maybe I'm just lucky.

Here's what it really comes down to, if your dog or kid can't be controlled then they don't belong at the crag.

PS. Are dogs gear now, or is this a question about where to find the best anti-dog gear?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
