I'm not all "butt hurt" I'm just stating a fact of who was behind the closure, its no mystery the Sierra Club and the CBD are behind it. Those are two of the big groups named on the law suit filed against the NFS to close Williamson, just stating fact. I realize this petition isn't going to change the land managers mind, the main reason I want to keep it going is to keep it on the local climbing communities radar. The AF is meeting with the NFS, CBD and hopefully the Sierra Club tomorrow up at Williamson to do a site visit. Hopefully common sense will prevail on both sides and at some point in the future a compromise can be had that pleases both parties.

Just seems weird for climbers to be describing the Sierra Club, founded by John Muir, patron saint and savior of Yosemite, as a "Special Interest Group."

The Sierra Club is definitely not the same group that it was when Muir started it and it's not even the same club that it was 20 years ago.

This area along with many others should open some eyes. We are not the only ones out there. Climbers being aware and educated about the life that surrounds the areas we use will serve us well. Being an ecologist and climber it's always alarming to me when I see groups that feel entitled to any area of the wilderness. Take a look at the Obed they are doing things the right way.

It's interesting that the hundreds of cars parked along the highway by Switzers on the weekends and the thousands of people walking down the riverbed doesn't seem to bother the frogs or the NFS. Don't get me started on diapers floating down the East and West Forks of the San Gabriel and people dumping hibachis and trash into the river but nobody would dare restrict access to that group.

I just want to make sure my perspective was clear. I'm entirely open to the fact that the NFS might be entirely wrong. I'm even open to the fact that the Sierra Club could be entirely wrong about this being critical MYLF habitat. But I think if climbers are going to try to draw a line in the sand between environmental groups and climbers and position us (climbers) as generally opposed to the environmental groups (by defining them as "special interests") then you are picking an unnecessary and losing battle. Leave those kind of tactics to the dune buggy drivers and the clear cut loggers. I'm generally aligned with and friends with the people wanting to preserve nature and ecology.

Signed! Would love for the PCT to get off the damn highway and back into the woods here. Plus climbing.

Kevin Mokracek wrote:All things considered I think if they let 90 people a day is pretty good. On most weekdays I don't think it ever reached 90 people using the area. Thanks for your efforts. I climbed and guided there in the late 90's. I'm a non resident now but Williamson was a great place to climb. If AF gets this going maybe I'll reconsider giving them some $$.

Kevin, you mentioned weekdays, what about weekends, what was the weekend usage prior to the closure? Will be interesting to see how they manage the permit system. Also any ideas on when the raptor and frog closure will be from? I hope it's realistic, and not something ridiculous. Still a lot of work to be done here to get the place reopened. Keep spreading the word.
