Indoor climbing at the Bellingham YMCA

I am wondering how the climbing is at the Bellingham YMCA. Do you have any experience with it that you can share here?

I know that Bham has a nice bouldering gym, but due to recent knee surgery, I can't boulder for awhile. It would be nice to do some indoor roped climbing later this winter, and the Y is the only one I know of nearby. I have heard of a new gym in the Skagit area, but that is too far away for my purposes.

Hey John, I've been climbing at the y over the years.it's an older enterprise wall that's 70 ft a and a shorter bouldery wall. You can only go during specific hours and some.of the holds haven't moved in 8 years.. great place to get back after an injury though. Full gym included!

Thanks Andy for the info. Wow, 8 years...

But that's fine if the routes don't change often. I'd just like to get some fun training in and get the knee back in shape. I'll plan on trying it out in the new year.

Hey Jon, I just started training at the Y instead of Vital and am always looking for partners so if you'd like a catch next year feel free to PM me!

Might be worth checking if you can climb at Westerns climbing wall. Not huge, but enough there to keep you busy for a day.

3 options in the area:

* Vital (4 locations, multi-million dollar llc)

* YMCA (8 year holds, in the same spot)

* Riverstone (Walltopia walls, Auto-belay, new holds weekly,
owned and operated by a local crag developer)

-not trying to be a jerk, but aside that stuff, Riverstone is a grassroots operation. A climber's climbing gym.

Thanks Taylor, I'll be looking to go after the new year starts, and I'll try PMing you.

Gavin, I didn't know Western had roped climbing. Thanks for mentioning it. But other than having my daughters go there, I don't have a connection. I could try visiting, though I might not be allowed in.

Yosoymilk - thanks, Riverstone looks nice. I will check it out someday. Vital is great, but it wouldn't be worth it unless one went to boulder.

I'm sure Western has day passes available. They probably also have monthly and yearly memberships as well. That's how it works at EWU at least, and the pass also works for the gym and other rec center amenities (eg ice skating, basketball courts)

I'm fairly certain Western has day passes/memberships available to the general public, though I'm sure they'd be more expensive than the Y. But at least they set new routes every couple weeks! It is a small facility though.

Thanks Matthew, Eric. I'll check them out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
