Hey fellow climbers,

I'm moving to Vegas in about a month. I'm currently in the process of looking for apartments and would love anyone's inside knowledge on best neighborhoods to check out. I'll also take any other inside knowledge on food, Red Rocks climbing, and anything else you wanna give me.

Thanks

Mackenzie

P.S. I'll be needing new climbing partners if anyone wants to show me Red Rocks.

If it's not too far from your work somewhere around summerlin is definitely one of the best places to live. Close to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and not bad getting to mount charleston in the summer time!

I find that a lot of the good food is closer to I15 but there are plenty of exceptions.

If you do move to summerlin expect lots of luxury cars and a couple of shopping centers with the types of stores that charge $10 for an ice cream cone!

If you know Simon's humor you would know this is NOT true.I can't even find ice cream here...it's usually gelato! Living somewhere from west of rainbow , south of lake mead and North of Flamingo is ideal. I live in a community called Elan and i love it. As for climbing partners, hit me up any time especially is you climb trad!

Before I moved to UT I lived in Lone Mountain neighborhood, 15 min from the loop road, walking distance to BLM/singletrack and a small limestone crag, and cheaper than Summerlin.

I love this thread. Wilders unite! (Figured if you two were related this thread wouldn't exist..)

My comment on ice cream is based on this place.

Good but you could easily spend $17 or so on two people there. No thanks!

..wait you need my whole wallet?

I just moved out here a few months ago and so far I am really enjoying the easy access to climbing. I''m in Summerlin and really like it. As already mentioned, Lone Mountain is nice - I've done some cycling around there and it seems as safe and clean as Summerlin. Lone Mountain probably isn't any further from RR than some parts of Summerlin. A lot will depend on your budget - Leslie can probably tell you from experience to avoid North Las Vegas. Anything reasonably close to RR should be decent, though. If you're female, definitely choose your neighborhood wisely.

I've found the climbing community very friendly- as long as you're a safe and competent belayer then there shouldn't be too much of an issue with finding partners. I've had the pleasure of roping up with a few of the folks that have responded to your post.

Actually John.... IT IS!!! Just so you know what your talking about next time.... Summerlin goes south to Sunset/Maule in some sections and includes Sienna and all of The Mesas/Cliffs subdivisions .... but hey... what do I know, my family's only been in the valley for 60+ yrs and sold them some of the land ;D

but just to throw you a bone ... technically Handels is on the east side of Hualapi and therefore isn't "quite" in Summerlin(missing it by 50'+/-) due to Hualapis centerline being the boundary line for "That" section of Summerlin

Do you know how many times I have googled "ice cream" and Vegas and gotten NOTHING but Lappert's? ( which does not even serve homemade ice cream.)From now on, I am just gonna ask you, or mountain project, for all my Vegas beta needs, climbing related or not!

Mackenzie,

My girlfriend and I recently moved to Vegas as well (late August). We live just west of the 95 on the edge of Summerlin and like it well enough. Lots of access to grocery, restaurants and anything else you could need, quick access to the highway for getting to work and about 25 minutes to Red Rock.

We also are out climbing nearly every weekend and have yet to meet any local climbers so if you are looking for a group to climb with shoot me a PM.

I cant say much about the climbing community here as the aforementioned lack of meeting people. The folks at desert rock sports are all awesome and very helpful with Beta. I'm sure joining a gym would help with meeting folks just with the accessibility to outdoor climbing we have yet to make it a priority.

Makenzie,

Seems like once you get west of Rampart (runs north south) things get pricier. I live near Torrey Pines and Lake Mead. That's good access to work on the freeways with alternate routes possible, 20 minutes to Calico Basin and 40 minutes to Mary Jane Falls parking lot at Mt. Charleston. About every food I eat I can find in a 4 mile radius..Trader Joes, Sprouts, MarkeOn, etc. I have a friend who lives near Cimmaron and Cheyenne...That's not to poor a location.
If you're thinking long term through the summer it's nice to be in one of the air drainage micro-climates which come off the escarpment.

Depends on your budget. For the single white girl and your age, think carefully about where you choose. You can find weekly publishing of crimes in the various neighborhoods online. One quirky thing about Vegas is little enclave neighborhood can have a welcoming flavor and high safety factor yet be adjacent to an area of drugs and domestic crime.
There's a few local climbers who will rent you a room if you want to go that route
while you figure the town out. Get on Facebook and post in Vegas Climbers
Can't speak to the ice cream.
A more recent thread here advertises a place over by Decatur and Alexander. They are great people. You could do a lot worse. edited to add content 12/10/2106
