Lost: Alpine Draw at Olive Oil, Red Rock

Dropped one of my alpine draws, uh, I mean, one of my alpine draws LEPT from my grasp--yeah, that's it--just as I was about to put it on my harness. (Not at ALL that I was a clumsy oaf.) Fifth pitch up, so not sure where it landed. It's a Black Diamond 60cm dynex runner with distinctive black and red colored areas where it's sewn. Biners are Petzl Ange (L), one silver, the other bright blue. It has a BD #10 stopper nut on it (apparently they plotted the escape together). If you return it safely to me, unharmed (beyond the wee little tumble it took when I dropped it--I MEAN, when it tried to escape!), there's a six pack of your favorite beer in it for you. I'm afraid, at this point, you're just going to have to go through the grief process and let it go. You and your draw have many beautiful memories together, but you've each gone your own way now. It's not coming back to you.

You realize a 6 pack of good beer is going to be about the same price as an alpine draw? Not to mention its a hassle for the other person who has potentially found your gear to return it to you. Just go buy a new one and stop cluttering up the board with pointless posts.

I dropped a draw last year. Every time i go by the climb I look for it. I assume it ended up in a pine.

Sad, but I've accepted it's gone. I'd recommend you move on. Accepting the loss and replacing the stopper and alpine draw will start the process of grieving.

Now you are just being hysterical. It would take an outright mutiny of my multitudes of trad gear to force me into top roping. Besides, sport gear is too wimpy to mutiny, I'd still be able to clip bolts.

Perhaps thats what all these, I dropped a $6 piece of equipment, but I'll buy you $20 in beer if you ship it back to me threads really are. Memorials to our dearly departed gear. Almost makes me want to be more empathetic to folks who lose $6 in gear.

At least Scott360 was out like $20 at full retail, so the beer for the sentinmental value of the gear was definitely a square trade. Plus, he was no doubt taking the scissors to the sling and a forge to the biners and nut to teach the rest of the gear a lesson in what happens to gear that runs.

Realistically, most posts on MP are idiotic posts cluttering the forum. And this is the lost and found form; it seems reasonable to post something you lost here...

Strange... people don't want you posting about lost gear... in the lost and found thread! WTF??? Maybe we should post about the weather in it???

If they want. In this case people are reacting to how trivial the item is - two biners and a sling dropped from 5 pitches up - and how out of proportion the reward is to the item.

You've got enough money not to? Good for you. Me? If there's a chance I can retrieve it, I'm going to. "Out of proportion to the reward:" curious, and perhaps also telling of your venal character. What percentage of an item's value do you need to be remunerated to do the right thing--50%, 75%? I'm the type of person who does the right thing because it's the right thing to do--NOT that I think a lesson in morality would benefit you. (Clearly that ship has sailed.) To help you connect dots that obviously elude you, the offer to buy someone a six pack wasn't to offset the cost of the item, but to express gratitude. And since I live in Vegas--10 minutes from the entrance to Red Rock, and can be contacted via MP's email, it wouldn't be much of an imposition to return the draw to me. Most climbers, and people in general, want to do the right thing. And, I believe, most want to help others out. That's sort of the purpose of the Lost and Found forum, and, come to think of it, Mountain Project in general. Kierkegaard once said, "The door to happiness swings outward." I hope--and dare I speak for others?--WE hope, you discover as much.
