Homestead Road Repairs & Closure THIS WEEKEND

Has anyone been down the new road with a "regular" SUV? Or do you still need wrangler or better?

I still have not climbed out at the Homestead, but after reading how shity the access road seems to get on a regular basis I thought I would throw this out there. I have a S570 Bobcat with a standard bucket that I would gladly donate the use of from time to time to help fix up the really nasty spots on that road. Its not the best for breaking up hard spots and especially not rocky protrusions, but it would work really well to move loose material around up and down hill to fill in spots.

The road requires a 4X4 vehicle. The first vehicle to attempt the road (they said it was ok because they were friends of the AF folks) became stuck and almost tipped off the lower part of the road. Brilliant.

CTB, thanks and you should contact Ty Tyler to offer help. That sounds like a great thing to do. At least until the final fix is done.

So a AWD Honda CRV is a no go?

I saw a WRX all the way at the main trailhead but that doesn't make it a good idea. There's still some slippery spots as evidenced by the photo of the stuck vehicle above.

I think it's doable in a CRV but you need a solid escape plan plan due to the still very real possibility of getting stuck.

Probably good to have a 4 wheel drive as that will keep your tires from spinning and tearing up the new work. If you don't have one find someone who does or hike in, it is only an hour. You can usually get someone going in to ferry you or your gear to the trailhead making the hike easy. Stewardship means making choices that maintain the hard work and expense made to fix things up. Thanks for donating to the Access Fund as they worked hard to make this place accessible for future generations even if you have to find a friend with a 4X4.

Really!?! I'm surprised it had the clearance to get up the first half mile, let alone the whole road. Would have been interesting to watch.

Jumped the locked gate? This WRX must have an 18"+ lift. I want to see this rig!

Climbed here yesterday. Only one other party in the canyon. They smartly decided to park their Hyundai Accent at the bottom and walk in. While the road is greatly improved (thanks access fund and volunteers!), I would be reticent to drive my Outback up this road. It's still a four wheel drive 4 low situation. Spinning tires will mess up the fix real fast.

We had a FJ so I didn't need to use it, but the trail looks awesome. Strong work people.
