Took a direct hit from a multi-lb block of ice.

A gentleman just passed away at indian creek after sustaining a head injury last week. Impossible to say if it could have saved his life but it could have made the difference

Thanks for the reminder Greg that helmets can save lives. Glad you are okay!

Are you talking about Mark Davis (I thought that was a rap accident) or was there another death at IC?

It was a rap accident. The report said he rapped off his ends 20 feet off the ground on a single pitch route. His death was caused by head trauma. Like said above, 20 feet is a survivable height but not if you hit your head. But... who knows, we can only say it might of helped but perhaps he would have passed regardless. Very sad.

I honestly didn't know the details, other than the fact that he rapped off the end of his rope.

I generally think of a helmet as protection from 1) falling objects such as rock and ice and 2) striking one's head on the rock during a fall which has been arrested by a rope. I never really considered it as protection from a ground fall, but you're right, 20 feet is survivable and it may have helped. RIP.
