Best area to dirtbag around for a month.

Will have a month free this summer, with a small amount of savings to spend. Where in the lower 48 would be the easiest (cheapest) area to dirtbag around in June? Rock type doesn't matter. Just looking for places where it's easy to link up with other climbers, good climbing atmosphere. Thank you in advance.

Lander isn't a bad place to be in the summer plus plenty of climbers up for the festival and there's numerous places to camp for free!

Eastern Sierras isn't a bad option, tons of free camping options on BLM land. Got the High Sierras to escape heat and can chase shade/sun at most crags and bouldering areas.

Laramie wyoming. Vedauwoo is spectacular on all climbing fronts and other destinations like boulder and eldo and lander are all close. College town, things are cheap. Prob be best April through November.
Also free camping in most of Vedauwoo

Bump. Also, if anyone has a link to a similar article or past MP thread relating to the subject it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Having camped at Owens in the middle of July, I will say that there are much more appealing options for me. The heat and sun were quite oppressive. The camping area we used was very exposed to the sun, and perhaps that was avoidable and our mistake, but I will not be returning to Owens in the summer.

I'll put in a vote for Smith Rock. Lots of climbers, good scene and amenities. Hot in the summer, but lots of shade to be had, and water nearby.

And I know it's not technically the lower 48, but Squamish is damn close! Gets my vote

Anywhere in Colorado that you all can think of?

June in the Front Range would offer endless climbing and a ready supply of climbing partners. You just need to find a place to camp...

For Colorado, the Estes Park, Buena Vista and Durango areas would all offer a variety of climbing nearby, and reasonable camping options (especially Buena Vista). The actual towns are tourist shitshows all summer long, though.

I guess I should have included a needed factor: free camping.

What type of climbing are you looking to do? Big Wall, Bouldering, Sport, a mix of different styles?

+1 for Durango. It's super easy to dirt bag it in Durango and being homeless doesn't carry as much of a stigma consider a significant portion of the population (i'll guess somewhere around 15-20%) choose to be seasonally homeless. Getting around on a bike is super easy, as is finding a place to camp or car bivy.

Lander is cool. I don't know about the camping at Index anymore, but it was free at one point. Ten Sleep would also fit the bill.

I spent last summer doing the same thing in my camper.

I spent most of my time between the eastern sierra and lake tahoe.

Lots of free camping (w/ hot springs), beaches at Tahoe to hang at on rest days/ after climbing,

great climbing, lots of climbers but for high country objectives (the real good stuff) it is hard to find a partner,,,

(most locals have a solid partner or folks traveling from LA to climb)

Can't think of a better place to be though!

All have free camping, pleasant summer temps. May have to plan a bit for partners though
