I'm flying to the east for the holidays December 18 - January 15. Is the ice coming in yet in New Hampshire?

Nope. Maybe in a few weeks. Most things are bone dry right now.

So far we are still rock climbing.

I thought the last time I would get out was 3 weeks ago. How wrong I was. Might go out next week when I'm finished with finals.

It's been too warm for bouldering, never mind ice climbing. Damn El Nino....

This blows.

The ski resorts are screwed, too.

Makes up for how good the ice season was last year.....

I really feel for all the folks whoes jobs depend on winter. It is a catostrophic blow for them this christmas.

I'm genuinely worried about the Ice Bash coming up in Smuggs. It's currently high 40s and raining in Burlington with 60 forecast latter this week.

Such a shitty winter.

Umm...at the risk of pointing out the painfully obvious, it's not winter yet! I've always said patience is one of the the ice climber's greatest assets. Yes, I'm chomping at the bit, too, but whatayagonnado?

Go rock climbing on the days it does not rain.....

Yeah, I know that according to the calendar, it is supposed to be winter! But real winter rarely gets here before January, let's be patient and not pick unripe fruit!

This is simply not true for northern NY and New England. A typical year has fat ice in December (if not November).

On the plus side, there's plenty of water in the system. A couple days of seasonable weather and things should lock up nicely.

+1

Last year this time, the ice in the Adirondacks were fat. It also snowed four feet then it all melted too.

Is it possible to have a year where climbable ice doesn't really come in at all?

Probably not...... But freaky things can happen.

last year was a crazy good year despite the early hard jan thaw that happened xmass week. this year is in the top 3 warmest Nov/ dec on record in VT

last year got up le promenade on dec 6th. my previous earliest for the prom was dec 21st.

The Catskills can see years when there's little ice for the entire season. Not typical for the Whites, ADKs, or Greens/VT.

For frame of reference, here's Albany's 20 least snowiest winters. I'm just using snowfall as a gauge for a period of cold. In reality you would need to look for 3+ days of sub freezing temps to know if ice was actually forming anywhere.

weather.gov/media/aly/Clima…

You'll note, even the least snowiest they had 14" for that season. It's unlikely winter will completely miss us. Just might be late and not last long.
