Toproping through Rap Rings - Gunks

Hats off to you LandsEnd for you counter-point.

Judging from the posted photograph of LandsEnd, it seemed improbable that this person would be involved with "ethical improprieties". Just and opinion.

In any event, the Gunks are filled with the "World's Policemen", just itching to self aggrandize.

If an unsafe or unethical condition is observed, always the better approach is to quietly, confidently and respectfully explain.

That has nothing to do with anything that has been said. But congrats. You got some attention.

Huh.

OP was logged on 5 hours ago, but didn't respond to this thread.

Weird.

I agree with this! LandsEnd was in the wrong and I think he's now been educated--perhaps a bit too thoroughly. I'm thankful that conscientious partners taught me climbing etiquette but know that many new climbers don't have access to experienced mentors. It's helpful to keep that in mind when offering advice at the crag. There is no need to publicly shame someone for something they didn't realize (or didn't understand the importance of).

Anyway, I really wanted to post to suggest that the OP remove the photo of LandsEnd. It was not published with his permission I don't think it's commensurate with the crime of considering TR'ing through rap rings.

Pretty sure there aren't rules against publishing photos you took yourself

I think you are right, Adam. I'm not suggesting that Schalk would face any forum push-back or legal ramifications, but LandEnd's unfavorable SEO could cause him issues.

If LandsEnd was causing widespread and legitimate safety issues...maybe a photo is the appropriate way to put a stop to it. In this case, I don't thinks it's fair or necessary.

Well, that's your opinion.

I happen to think that we don't shame people enough -that there is very little accountability for stupidity, which is part of the reason stupidity pervades and perseveres.

I'm not saying that this case is some huge awful travesty, but in general - folks need to be held accountable for their actions. Bad driving. Bad climbing. Bad parenting. Bad everything. Pictures are a fantastic way to do that. I like it.

Great example - we often walk down to Costco around lunch time to get some steps in, sunshine, maybe a few samples. The way people behave concerning the samples, waiting in line, being polite...it's LAUGHABLE. Animals, barely. I would love to just sit there and take short videos of people grabbing handfuls, knocking people out of the way, knocking over the sneeze guard, etc. and post them online with a shame blog. Follow them to their car to get license plate for proper public ID. San Diego better hope I never win the lottery, because I'd make this and similar projects my life's work.

No, but there are rules surrounding publishing a recognizable picture of someone without their consent (with some pretty clear exceptions, too).

Pretty sure there's no reasonable expectation of privacy at the Gunks.

Getting OT, but please post them rules up.

FWIW there is no expectation of privacy when one is in a public place. Now we can argue about climbing at the Gunks being a private preserve would qualify as being a public place or not.

Cute but don't really apply to anything in this thread, I'd wager.
