The Preserve first started talking about wanting to close Slime over 25 years ago, due to sanitation, noise, soil compaction, the fact that the Preserve really isn't in the campground business, etc. This was a long term desire, finally enabled by the new AAC site. Your grip is really with the AAC and their closure dates.
Disclaimer: the last time I camped in Slime was when I was in college, so no more recently than 1976. I always thought it sucked. If it was going to be a clear night, my pref was for one of the multitude of bivi sites...... until I bought a pick-up truck with a cap.
