"The Beckoning Silence", free on You Tube. 1hr 13 min. (Sadly, a more-than heavy metal band uses the same name......those clips are not the one you want). Based on Joe Simpson's book by the same name, it won the International Emmy for Outstanding Documentary in 2008. Great period costumes, hardware, etc. Simpson and another voice (?) narrates as Toni Kurz, Andreas Hinterstoisser, Edi Rainer and Willy Angerer attempt the first ascent of what then was considered the "last, great north face climb" to be done in Europe.

Check out the movie North Face (2008) aka Nordwand --a historical fiction narrative of the Kurz / Hinterstoisser attempt on the North Face of the Eiger in 1936. Probably one of the best movies I've seen at capturing the drama of climbing without settling for melodrama and Vertical Limit-esque hijinks. It's done well enough that it's even worth viewing for people that aren't necessarily climbers (although they'll think you insane for being one). Available to stream on Netflix and similar.

I agree with Fink; "The North Face" is also a great movie.....it compliments "The Beckoning Silence" (which is in English; "The North Face" is in German but English subtitled -- don't let that turn you off). I've heard some people say they've avoided seeing it because it sounded like...as Fink says...."Vertical Limit-ish". Not so. With a little bit of research (say, on Wiki), the political era of the times depicted in "The North Face" (because it's in German) as well as "The Beckoning" gives a better understanding to other forces at work in climbing the Eiger: Hitler's personal emphasis on it being climbed first by Germans. This was a very big deal to him. Some climbing historians have argued that this pressure may have been behind some of the ill-advised decisions that the two teams (that became one) made during the expedition. Am no expert on that aspect --- zero --, however, regardless of whatever political pressures may have existed, I suspect all of the climbers were on the mountain for the same reason: to step up to the challenge (their own challenge), give it a go, summit and return safely. Period. Oh, and to have a great adventure. And they definitely did that. I don't think the look on Toni Kurz's face says: "Hitler is making me climb the Eiger".

For still photos of the movie The Beckoning Silence & other images of other back-in-day, big mountain climbs search
Eiger expedition toni kurz hinterstoisser traverse images. Key word to add, in any order is "images". Probably could find if only searched "toni kurz tiger expedition images" and leave out "hinterstoisser" to save spelling it out. While Simpson & another guy narrate it, and Simpson climbs certain sections of the Eiger to the very spot where the four were when such-and-such happened, the movie is an accurate re-creation of the entire, famous and sad story. These guys invented the term "hardman". Cotton pants, no helmets, wool mittens, hemp rope, no harnesses...all costumes are accurate to the finest detail.
