This is a first for me. I would think adequate skills is the best insurance. I don't go places thinking there is a chance I will get seriously injured. I thought they bolted everything in France anyways. There is always becoming an American Alpine Club member and using their resources or just a simple life insurance.

I am an AAC member, so that provides some rescue insurance. However, when I go overseas I purchase travel insurance through the AAC. I say that only because I don't know if the rates will be affected. For my last two trips across the pond I got very good insurance with medical add-ons for about $115 and $150 respectively. The company is TravelGuard, underwritten by AIG.
The trips were a two week vacay to Kalymnos and a 7 week trip through Netherlands/Germany/Austria/Slovenia/Italy/Swiss. The policy covered $500,000 + $1,000,000 medical add on, including emergency transport etc. back stateside if needed and $4,000 gear/baggage coverage etc.
On the way back my gear was left at Heathrow, the company was VERY helpful in calling me every day to provide updates even though I was technically out of coverage by that point. I was impressed and I got my gear back!
If you want any further info, send me a PM. Cheers, Mac
