Thanks Dallen. Not worried at all. At first glance it looks horrible but it is actually bomber as you described. Kinda thought that might be why the post wasn't deeper.
Lets hope the cold actually makes it as forecast.

Does anybody have an update on Joe's, Maple, or the northern ice (Ogden or Logan)?

There is "some" ice up in the Uintahs. I was there yesterday and the road was open and drivable. We found a small piece at about 5 miles past the Soapstone gate on the east side of the road. I think it is the Colbert Creek Drainage. If you go stay out of the drainage and approach on the north (left) side of the drainage. The climb consists of 3 steps of ice. Anchors would be rock gear (very small rack .5-2 with a set of nuts) or you can just free solo the whole thing at a very moderate grade WI 3- Probably not worth the effort but it was fun getting out to explore. It has a walk off and there is an old trail going down the North (up canyon side)
We didn't see anything else along the road and we hiked from the Murdock Basin Turnoff all the way to Trial Lake and into Wall Lake. We were in a Civic. With a 4x4 you can go farther. One guy in a nice rig with snowmobiles parked at the upper provo River Falls. If you op for this option take skis or snow shoes- Thigh deep snow. We didn't and it made for a long day.

I went and did some laps on the dirtcicle yesterday morning. Looks about the same as it did on Friday. The water is now dripping down the left side but it's still a fun climb.

We have NO ice along the Wasatch front. Cooler temps will only be starting the process. There is no existing ice to improve.
In 15 years this is the latest start to a season that I have seen.

dirtcicle aka pricicle or is it the other way around????

dirtcicle

Anything that forms up in the Wasatch will probably be awful thin this weekend. If the weather gods smile on us the cold temperatures will continue and things will get fat in a hurry!

It's real name is Pricecicle, pricicle, or Price Cicle but some locals call it "Ford Creek Falls". The ice formation is just 10 miles Northwest of Helper Utah on hwy 6. You can belay from your bumper. (Almost literally) Normally I wouldn't post on the net where the only ice for 5 hours is, but lets get real, anyone with a passenger window knows where it is.

Its "real name"...ha ha. Based on what?

I recall Dave telling me it had been known as "Tinkertoys" way back when, but, can't recall who or what group gave it that moniker.

I've always called it the "Dirtcicle". Must be for the kinda actively spewing coal seam that runs across the route.

Wonder who did the earliest known ascent of it? Has been around and well known as an ice route for many years. Pre-80's I'd guess.

Hopefully colder weather here to stay soon!

Tinkertoys, I like it.

The Dirtcicle looks like hell. I drove by it on my way to Joes's today. It was visibly melting today and there was a huge difference from the morning to evening on the way home. Joe's is slim. We went up to Mary's Lake and found one climb in and thin. Then came down and climbed CCC with some mixed moves to get through one section that was back melted snowcone and about 2 inches thick. Highway to Heaven looked OK with the Headwall formed into a tall skinny pillar. I only saw this one from the road because we were running out of time. It was 45 degrees today down there.
It needs to get cold for us to have any chance for ice. But you all know that.

Honestly the best Ice in Utah that I have found is Mary's Lake only one route and up in the Uintah's which is more of an adventure then a real climb.
Good Luck out there.

Which route in Mary's?

Sunny-D · · SLC, Utah · Joined Aug 2006 · Points: 700

It is the second or third one from the right. Right now it goes at WI5. it is pretty thin and Steep.

Sunny-D - Is the one in the Uinta's in a little fatter or am I going to have to dry tool this weekend?

Sunny-D · · SLC, Utah · Joined Aug 2006 · Points: 700

Anyone have any info on Joes Valley? Finally some cool weather with some snow in Provo (think timp routes will be thick enough by the weekend?).

I was thinking if Joes Had some snow with a week of cold temps perhaps there may be something in by the weekend. Id like to go camp there this weekend but dont want to waste my time if there is nothing.

Went to Joe's yesterday. Drove up to Lake Mary but from the car the only route in looked to thin for my lead head. 1st pitch of CCC falls is in but the 3rd pitch curtain is not touching yet. Donorcicle is not touching yet either. Pricecicle is in good.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
