Going to Bear lake next week and was hoping to slip out and do some climbing. I will have a child with me so I was hoping to find an area fairly close to the car. I don't mind walking a little obviously but was hoping to keep it simple.
I see Kentucky fried penguin is close and mullein land seems doable from reading the descriptions. Does this sound right? Any other areas I should look into? Our group climbs in the 5.8 to 5.11 range. thanks for any tips
There are three areas that come to mind. Fucoidal quartzite lots of great moderate climbs right off the road. The betagraph about a ten minute hike and kinda steep but some really great climbs up there. And also First Practice wall which is right off the road as well. Have Fun!
KFP is literally ON THE ROAD. You can belay out the back of your truck. A small child can get hit by a car very easily here if he is a runner. There are only two climbs there, an .8 and .9. both fun. Mullen Land is more of an obscure climbing area in Logan, a couple fun ones but not a place I would recommend for a first time visit to Logan, and the approach trail is steep. FQ is by far the best crag for easy approach(20 sec), quality of climbing(despite some grease on the easier ones) and quantity of easy to harder climbs(5.7-12c). Betagraph is a 10-15 minute approach, but has the best 10d and 11c in the canyon, so get up there if you can.
Rodent Ranch/Wall of Jericho is also a good place for all grades. The hike is steep by Logan standards, but the rock is not greasy. It gets afternoon shade.
