Yo fool, if the preserve were not charging money they would have to go out of business and then there would be McMansions all over the land, it's private you know. The only place left to legally climb would be peterskill. Folks should go to the gunks there are already way too many obnoxious east coasters out here. Hey rgold, nice pics, I am one of the two at the time high school brats whose feet you almost dropped a boulder on because we were imitating the way you walk in the 70's "you'd walk funney too if I dropped this rock on your feet" still makes me laugh 35 years later.

You guessed it I've actually been to both places and it is only my 2 cents but Jtree hands down mostly for the reasons Eric listed. For one the dude is funny as hell in person (not so much through your posts though Eric). Since he is gone we wont have him to lead countless trips(hundreds last time I saw him) through the chasm without the headlamp the campground will miss that.

The truth is, you can't go wrong climbing in either area. You WON'T have a a bad trip in either locale. And if you consider yourself a true self-respecting rock climber, you'll spend time in both areas. I spent 5 winter seasons climbing in JT. But I love the Gunks with all my heart. It was the place I learned to climb. These days I feel so incredibly lucky to have climbed in the places I have. But I would love to return to the Gunks.
Also, do you have any idea what it like to drive through Oklahoma, northern TX, NM and AZ? Holy shit, its a long monotonous trip.

having climbed a decent amount at both places, i would go with the gunks. jtree is cool, no doubt, but the gunks are straight up world class. the climbing is exceptional, and the scenery in october is something you won't forget.

As someone who grew up climbing at Josh over 30 yrs. ago, I absolutely love the place. However, you're really going for the climbing, not all the other rather irrelevant things that Eric mentioned in his initial response. It seems that both places have lots of good routes in abundance. Josh might have an edge in terms of variety, but I think you'll be hard pressed to have a bad time at either place.

I am curious as to why the OP picked JTree... I mean miles don't seem to matter so why not go to the valley? There are tons of amazing places to climb and I love JTree but I would not go there if I had a choice of anywhere. I would head to the Valley. I am wondering if we got trolled...

probably the main reason i would choose the gunks over jtree is that the gunks is more unique. there are quite a few areas in the west that are similar (i would actually say better, to be honest with you) than jtree. there aren't too many areas that are like the gunks. the climbing is just soooo damned fun.

You are just TOO cool and you proved such a great point. First time a troll has ever worked in the history of the internet.... What was your point exactly? That you have to much time on your hands ever since your domestic partner Eric moved away?

if you didnt know RockyMtnTed, Eric is the easiest of the low hanging fruit because I know he wears his heart on his sleeve. everybody who knows him loves him not just me. I knew he would take the bait because he loves jt so much(this thread was meant for him if you must know). FU if you dont have people like him in your life maybe the problem is you. By the way he would go out of his way to make sure you had fun and came home safe if you met him at jt whether you are an a-hole or not.

I enjoyed the pictures too, and don't mind the occasional troll thread if it sparks discussion, as this one did. Personally, I love JTree the place, but don't care for the climbing. I don't like cracks to begin with, find runout slabs tedious and don't care for abrasive gritty rock. But obviously other people have different preferences. City of Rocks is similar but MUCH better, IMHO. JTree has 10,000 routes, of which 30 are worth climbing, while the Gunks has 1,000 routes, 800 of which are worth the effort. But camping is better at JTree. I think many Angelenos 'come of age' as climbers and as grown-ups while camping and climbing at JT, which biases them in favor of JT far beyond it's true merit. Mark

Rgold the guy who started this thread is a good friend of mine, but the joke was on me from the start and I didnt know it (he learned to climb at the gunks and I learned at Jtree). Turns out he and a few friends have been having a good laugh at my expense. I loved your pics and am sorry that your feelings are hurt. Take pleasure in knowing that until the dude swims in the ocean with actual natural floating ice up in Maine/Canada he will be taking shit from his buddies as that is the price he must pay for losing a bet unless he wants to be a "chickenshit" in our book.

I don't care if its a troll; its a good question. But lots of places are good in October. In fact, everywhere is good in October. Why limit yourself to two choices? (BTW I myself was in the Gunks last October)
