Ah yes, rock on to those who caught the ref.

HM. Darn. The LT already shipped. Maybe I can find someone local who will buy it. The R1 is another piece I've been feeling the need for. The pullover hoody right? (i.e. they don't make a zip hoody). I was thinking of either that or a merino hoody baselayer (don't think Paty makes one; was thinking of the Icebreaker Eclipse, 260 weight). How much warmth does a merino hoody provide?

Merino hoodies at such a heavy weight are shite. Heavy and don't ever dry. Gridded fleece is where it's at.

My Atom LT comes with me on almost every trip. I always have a use for it. Warmish, fairly breathable, dries fast, packs small.

Good to know! Thanks for the info. I have a thin, gridded fleece mid - it's definitely superb. Unfortunatel, no hood on that one either. But guess I had the right material.

How about you? Is your Atom a hood or non?

Keep in mind the following:
Atom SV - not a trim fit, no stretch panels
Atom LT - trip fit for layering, has stretch panels

I love the Patagonia R1

+1 for R1 that's my favorite piece of gear hands down. No hoddie was a mistake. LT or SV there both nice. My SV works fine as a mid layer I find streching isn't an issue with their cuts. R1+Atom SV+Alpha SV= the best combo for winter in Rockies.

I have the Atom LT hoody. It's great over the helmet. It fits a bit looser than the jacket, which is a bit looser than the pullover.

Other great gridded fleece options: NW Alpine's Black Spider Light Hoody (lighter than the R1, it's much more usable IMO), or Melanzana's Micro Grid Hoody. The hood acts as a balaclava and can fit under your helmet.

I have a hood on just about every garment I take into the backcountry. The exceptions are (some) base layers and soft shells.

MC,
Rock the hoodie. It'll be there when you want it and wont notice when you dont. Doesn't come w stuff sac but you can get a sturdy & accurately sized one on your own. I am 6'2 175 and the med Atom LT hoodie fits perfectly. +1 on the R1 as well.

Thanks for the continued feedback guys. Seems like the vote is about 314 for the hoody and zero for the non.

I wish there was a local store that stocked these. The slim fit of the jacket sounds nice, but the looser fit of the hoody isn't too flappy, is it? Like Paty?

I don't know what that means. 4th of July sales are kicking off so look around is you think you can do better than 30%.

The colors were a little out there for my tastes. Black is the new black for me.

Good call. I'll have to hit up the sales.

Headed out for a 3-day backpack trip into Yosemite next week - hope there will be some sales left after I get back! =)

"Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?" Hoody all the way. Also, Arcteryx just seems to fit better, although that might be just me. Patagucci seems to be tailered for short, barrel chested people. Im neither.

I just bought the atom lt with a hoodie for $240, but have the option to buy the non-hoody version for $140. This thread has managed to convince me that I want the hoody, but for a 100 dollar difference is it really worth it?

Is the hood the only difference between the jacket version and the hooded version?

I could wear a cowl and a beanie in its place right? And save 100 bucks :P

Please help me make a decision!!

It's worth $100. Easy. And if you're buying the Atom LT hoody for $240, you're not trying. Super easy to find it cheaper.

OK, thank you. I did find cheaper but it was always either the men's cut or an offer in the US. There is a lot less choice of women's version online and all the deals in the US end up costing more with exchange and shipping. I wore it to boulder on the coast yesterday and I figure it is worth the 240 anyway, hoody or not. Thanks for the tip! I am keeping the one I have got!

I have the Atom LT jacket and I love it, it's great!.........but that doesn't stop me from wishing I'd bought the hooded model almost every time I wear it. I've recently come to love hoods and am slowly realizing just how much warmth they offer.

I don't regret my purchase it still serves me well but I realize the hooded one would've served me better.

Get the hood.

FWIW I like my Nano-Air better than my Atom LT.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
