does anybody have experience insuring your gear and bikes especially while travelling?

Yes. I have renter's insurance through Assurant. I think I pay about $200 a year, with a $100 deductible, and all of my gear/stuff is insured up to $15k.

According to the agent, items can be stolen/destroyed from any location (van, my house, the gf's house, etc.) and my insurance policy will cover the items. The agent also explained that if any items were stolen/destroyed, I would need to show documentation (police report) that my items were stolen.

If you have any more questions feel free to shoot me a message.

nice to know! Progressive was charging $75 a month for 30k of property and 5k on both bikes. Our bikes are worth at least 7k plus the racks and camping/ice climbing gear will add up to at least 10k more! Your insurance seems to be more reasonable. thanx!

Any basic homowner insurance covers all personal gear while on the road from damage/theft.

mine was a car insurance that was supposedly giving a prorated rate and the bikes had to be "scheduled" i don't think we need that much of coverage for personal property but more to be put into bikes which they would not do so it can get technical with some insurance companies, I dont own a house anymore so still trying to decide which renters insurance would be best in our case. Also we are considering going abroad this winter (Canada) so will probably need something that will work worldwide.

Most common insurance policys will cover your property "contents" any where in the world but I would make sure to ask your agent the question. Then it just depends what type of policy you want. A standard policy will cover your proper for "named perils". This means it only covers your items for the standard stuff, theft, fire, etc. Some companies offer an endorsement for "open perils" coverage on contents. This means, the damage is covered unless excluded. So you could have the potential to have coverage for simply losing your gear, which is something that would not be covered on a "named Perils" policy. But for a bike or climing gear you should not have to schedule anything. This things will typically not have a "special limit" in your policy. For example, guns and money have "special limits" for theft. Money is typically capped at $200 for theft, Jewlery at $2500 with a lower per item limit, Guns - $2500. These are good questions to ask you agent as well. But again, there should be no special limit for gear or bikes. Just make sure you have documentation for them, photos, sales receipt, etc.

Renters insurance is a good deal for coverage because the deductiables are so low compared to homeowners insurance.

Make sure your renters insurance is replacment cost coverage.

I'm using renter's insurance.

I had to shop around as this was one of the requirements when getting insurance quotes.

Many companies have limits on just how much they'll cover in or ON your car, mine will insurance for as much as what's in the house.

You kinda want to get some decent coverage when you're carrying a couple fiberglass sea kayaks on the roof and climbing/camping/paddling gear.

Obviously you need to be living out of a rented car.
