So sorry to hear this. What an icon!

A minor correction....Climbing magazine was started in 1970.

Very very sorry to hear that. I knew he was in poor health for a while now. I was glad to meet him a couple of years ago at Kinfolks. I hope his family and loved ones are around him now. We'll be thinking of him over here.

Sad news. Larry thanks for keeping track of and supporting Harvey through the years. He is one of a kind for sure.

Visited Harvey today, Sunday.

Sobering, the changes from just a week ago. He's now on oxygen, weaker, pretty much staying in bed. But still alert and talkative, in fairly good spirits. Says he's worried about Layton. Talking of his legacy of first ascents, he joked, "Trouble is, you can't eat new routes......"

Met him a few times, but more than anything, I just can't believe some of the places I've found his red dots. Just when I'd feel that I'd found a crag way way out there, five or six miles off old stage or something, where I was sure no climber had been crazy enough to explore, sure enough I'd see his red dot at the base of anything climbable (and sometimes stuff not so climbable!).

RIP Harvey.

I only got to meet Harvey once.....In 2000 or so, my brother and I were up at Ute Pass exploring the great bouldering for our first time. We were up near the ships prow when a pack of dogs showed up; a couple minutes later a group of older men rounded the corner. We thought for sure we were about to get busted for trespassing or something. Low and behold, it was Harvey and Jimmy Dunn. I felt incredibly privileged to meet 2 legends and spend an afternoon bouldering with them. I was star-stuck to be honest. Harvey told us about his red dots and pointed a few of them out at Ute Pass. I'll echo Patrick....I have been in some amazingly obscure areas in the Platte and around C. Spgs and found Harvey's red dots. It was always humbling but inspirational to see them.

Thanks for all the inspiration Harvey, you were a true Colorado Springs Icon. When I learned to climb in Cheyenne Canyon way back when, Harvey Dots were the guidebook.

RIP, positive thoughts going out to his family & friends.

It is a true sadness to learn of Harvey's passing. A great man has left us a great legacy. Some non-climbing photos of Harvey can be seen in the Facebook Photo Album titled "In Remembrance of Harvey T. Carter" viewed at facebook.com/media/set/?set…;type=3

You've been an inspiration to many Harvey. Thank you.

Many Thanks to everyone who gave Harvey support while he was ailing. His passing has surely closed an era in American rock climbing. He was surrounded by friends and family in his last hours and left without pain and little suffering. Are those ringing bells or pins being driven I hear drifting down from Heaven? Lets keep the memories alive!! As soon as I get my act together, there'll a slide show coming to a venue near you (Apr.-May) Thanks again to all on behalf of the Carters. Peace, Larry
