Moving to the Chapel Hill area...

Hi all-

I'm moving down to NC next month for about five months for a research position at UNC Chapel Hill. I'll also probably be doing some work at Duke, and some in RTP. Any advice on where to live, or places to avoid? And what's the best local gym? If you're in the area and want to climb a few nights a week or plan trips on weekends, let me know!

Happy New Year!

Places to avoid? Chapel Hill. The whole place!

No I'm joking... I graduated from NCSU.

Anyways, there are plenty of places in Durham to avoid but you wouldn't be finding them on the internet anyways. Other than that, the RTP area is pretty safe and there are plenty of fine places to live.

TRC is the best local gym, but there are a few locals w/ woodies and there are the campus gyms which you may or may not have access to.

Asheboro boulders is close and a good cold weather spot. You need to go w/ a member of the CCC.

Moore's Wall will be in come early spring and it is a must visit. About two hours from RDU.

Make sure you get to Linville Gorge! Enjoy!

I'm at UNC as well.

If you're affiliated with UNC, you should be able to pay a nominal fee for gym privileges, which includes the two on-campus gyms. They're pretty good. If you have student status, they're free.

The community center in Chapel Hill also has a good wall for a great price. I don't climb there often, though because the campus gyms are good.

Like Scott said, there are two gyms on campus, and one at the local Community Center (limited hours). You should be able to use UNC gyms if you are affiliated with the university (visiting scholar etc...).The best gym, Triangle Rock Club, is about 35 minutes away from Chapel Hill and is near RTP.

Good bouldering about 1 hour away and some good roped climbing within 1.5-2 hrs. There are lots of good weekend destinations and something is good almost year round. Get in touch if you end up climbing at UNC.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm not sure if I'll have UNC affiliation - EPA affiliation definitely, UNC still uncertain... I get down there this week and will scout out the gyms. And I'll look forward to getting outside when it warms up. Thanks for the welcome!

Are you with the EPA Human studies division on campus? If so, I'm not sure if you'll have access...I'm not sure how that works. I'm in Toxicology at UNC. Feel free to get in touch if I can provide any additional help. There is someplace to climb here at almost any temperature....usually no need to wait for better weather.

I'm actually one of your lab rats at EPA human studies.
