Make the desired slice then singe with a lighter. Sure it works, but I want to step it up.

What are those machines at mountaineering stores that cuts and singes the rope all at once. Do you know where to buy one?

They are called Bench Mounted Hot Knife. You can find them online or your local hardware store.

Here's what I do:

I have an old knife that got beat up (the point go broken off), and I decided to retire it. Well I use a stove to heat it up and then just gut through the cord. Same idea as the bench mounted hot knifes, just a little but less expensive. Be sure to wrap the handle of the knife in a towel or something to keep it from burning you.

Box cutter + blow torch. Overkill but how awesome is it to use a glowing-hot box cutter on something?? :-)

To add to what others say if you wrap the rope a few times with climbing tape before you cut it, then cut in the middle of the tape it will help keep the cord from unraveling.
