Portero Chico over Christmas/New Years

I'm looking for someone who doesn't have family stuff to do over the holidays. It can be difficult to find someone free during that time. Portero Chico is mostly sport climbing up Mexican mountains. I can sport 10.c/d on lead. Follow harder. I can trad too, lead 5.9-10.a.

I've had good luck on MP and some bad luck on MP with partner finding. I prefer a person that is reliable and has a positive mental attitude. No negativity! I take having fun very seriously! If you want to go, lets meet up and try to climb some first to determine if we get along.

Those who want laid, paid, or belayed, need not apply! :) I'm on FB also, if you want to get more info. about me. Thanks!

Just in case anyone is looking at this post, the trip to Potrero was great! Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible for me to have the confidence to go alone! -Sonya

Sonya-

Do you mean Potrero Chico? Sounds like the place you describe, have fun!

Sonya Erickson · · Colorado Springs, Colorado · Joined Nov 2007 · Points: 130

Yep, that is what I meant. Sorry for the mis-spelling. Spanish is my second language. I don't always get things exactly right, but people usually know what I mean anyway! Hope I find someone cool to go. It should be really fun.

Sonya, I might be able to find someone from Austin to climb with down there if my friends still make the trip. I'll let you know.

You'll have no trouble finding motivated partners down here--especially at that time--it's the peak of the season.

I pm'd you, but you may not have received it. I'm looking to do a trip at the same time. Around 12/25-1/2 or so. Looking to do long 10s and 11s. I've never been to El Potrero Chico - where do people recommend staying?

You might look into La Pagoda and stay in one of the rooms there. It's pretty quiet there and you should be able to get some sleep. You can hang out at La Posada if you want company.

Hey! I'm solo tripping somewhere over the holidays and portrero is definitely an option! I hear its pretty easy to meet ppl when you're down there but i also heard there was a travel advisory there. Unfortunately, I can't come to tennessee to test our climbing compatability. pm me if you're interested in chatting! :)

I have plane tickets for Mexico to fly into Monterrey on Dec. 21st. I will be flying home on Jan 3rd. I will be camping at LaPosada. I'm super excited about going. I hear that the only place where there is a little travel trouble is Monterrey, but I will only be there long enough to get picked up at the airport. Portero is pretty safe, I hear. Still looking for partners, although a few very nice people have contacted me for climbing, and I will try ot find them once I get to Mexico, so e-mail or call if you want to climb!

Please, please, please, there are only two "R's" in Potrero. P-O-T-R-E-R-O.

Not Portrero.

Oh, and find partners there between Christmas and New Years is really easy. Seriously, partner finding is even easier than getting laid, sick, or climbing 5.12 there. It's really easy.

Hey Sonya! Sounds fun! I'm gonna check out flights. Would you be up for sharing a ride there if I end up flying in on the same day?

Either sharing a cab or getting one alone, it's pretty affordable. La Posada is where most people hang out at night, so you'll meet people easily, Sonya.

She has used only 2 R's every time she has spelled it... Still misspelled though but she hasn't said "portrero" yet so calm down buddy.

My God, I just noticed that. Still, not going to calm down. There are rules, dammit.

hahaha I agree though, it's slightly annoying to keep spelling it that way after its been pointed out... Especially cause its her second language :)

Hope you find a partner Sonya! Looks like an awesome place and hoping to go down myself soon...

Hey Sonya! Hope the Beta helped see you down there. I'll be there sometime just after Dec. 1st. Look for the old blue Toyota from Utah.

Sorry if I upset someone by my spelling. I guess I type fast and pretty much think people get the jist of what I'm going for. Let me see P-O-T-R-E-R-O......ok I think I got it. Hope to find all my Mountain Project folks once I get down there. Everyone has been very kind and helpful with advice. Still arriving Dec 21st. Bringing canned goods, so I don't get sick.

canned goods? Save on the weight, food in Mexico is not only cheap but really good. Shopping for fresh produce at the market in Hidalgo is a great experience on a rest day. Water in Potrero is clean, we drank from the tap all winter and survived.

you are going to go to mexico, and not eating authentic mexican food?!

wouldn't that be like going to yosemite, and only sport climbing?

(have fun, eat some tacos, and swill some beer for me!)

Yeah, bringing down canned goods out of paranoia of illness is a little ridiculous.

Lots of people get sick at Potrero, and in the 5 seasons that I went there, I saw no correlation between illness and what people were eating or drinking. Some people were completely paranoid in a sort of patronizing first-world-type way; checking gallons of American bottled water, food, and such in their airline luggage, and would still get sick. Honestly, I saw more people got sick from breathing the smog-infused air than they did from what they ate.

The water at the Potrero is probably better than a lot of US water. The canned food you can buy at grocery stores is just as safe as stuff in the US. Buy fresh food at the market, wash it back at camp, and you should be fine.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
