Samaniego Ridge

Anybody on here ever climb Samaniego Peak?

I have been spending a lot of time up there lately. A group of local mountain bikers have been working with the FS to reopen the trail.

Since the fire the trail had become extremely overgrown the FS had worked the top and bottom sections but ran out of money before they finished. We have been working to do the middle section first by opening the trail to Walnut Spring.

The trail is now open all the way to Walnut Spring we will be working past there this weekend. This weekend will also be the first attempt at using rope to get past the cliff. The current route, nicknamed the "Corkscrew of Death" involves a short stretch of 3rd class and is a pain with the bikes.

Bob Kerry has. The Backcountry Guide to Southern Arizona which can be found on climbaz.com I think, has the routes listed.

Yes a hand full of routes mostly 5.9 I was more interested in seeing if any one ever does them. I haven't been out to the peak yet maybe this next trip down. Bob says to drive or mountain bike up the Gap road and then up the trail. And that you would likely be too whipped to climb when you got there.

We do it as a shuttle ride mostly though a couple of guys did it as a loop from town. I would guess that walking back up the mountain would be better then starting at the bottom.

Eric thanks for the reply though and I will say the I always had an easy time finding routes along the Lemon highway I thought the book was well done and the author seems like a nice guy.

I just checked out the link I already have the book but it was cool to see the whole thing on the web. Seems like there no point in putting out poorperson's guides any more not when you can get info on plenty of routes right here.

Planning a trip for August 12-14th. Will try at least one of the climbs.
