Didn't even know that there was a Mueller state park before this thread but it looks like a sweet place. I support climbing in our State Parks!

It is great to see so many of you interested in pitching in to make this happen! I think the best thing we can do right now is to try and get as many people as possible to post on this thread, and then on Monday we can consult with our friends over at the Access Fund on how best to proceed. They don't have a threshold for the amount of people showing interest before they will get involved but they do have limited resources so if we can demonstrate a strong coalition of climbers willing to take action that will only help us in the cause. With that being said if you can email fellow climbers that may have an interest in this matter, but might not frequent this forum, and ask them to post here as well that would be awesome.

I live in Colo Springs and would love to see the Climbing Access open up in the State Parks around here.

I loved camping there with my family when I was younger, and I'd love to climb there now! Sign me up.

Its great to see so much enthusiasm. Having extensive dealings with the State in a park which actually allows climbing but no new climbing, here is a suggestion. Someone should identify where the decision making buck stops. Not just the name of the committee, but the names that are on it and where in relation to the governors administration do they reside. Since State Parks and the DOW have been merged, this will not be as easy as it sounds as the folks involved likely do not even know who all is responsible for what. The State Gov't. is not like a typical organization with clear cut duties and job descriptions; administrators will typically believe that someone else has the final say. You will be asked to submit a proposal. It will get reviewed by the park manager and then move on into the 4th dimension. On something like 3 month intervals, you will inquire as to where things stand. You will hear its has passed this desk and is now heading to that desk. Who these people are will be kept vague. The minute someone determines resources will need to be applied (as in wildlife monitoring beyond what they already do) you will be rejected; but thats not the end as they will actually proceed appealing it for you. Its a bizarre dance of incredibly dense beaurocracy, the ultimate goal is to keep it alive but never actually have anything happen. So, the best way to circumvent all this bullshit is to approach it from top-down, know your opponent, and figure out how to apply political pressure. Potential bad publicity for the governor will shave months off the process, but beware of the enviros painting you as nature-killing yahoos, a political defense strategy for the governor. On a final note, get familiar with the land management concept of Front Country, which is currently out of favor but our best bet by far.

Mike - Thanks for the information. Since you have experience in these matters I'd like to reach out to you from time to time for advice if you are willing. I just sent you a PM.

I'm in favor of allowing climbing access at Mueller State Park. I inquired about this years ago, but I never got a satisfactory answer as to why climbing was not allowed.

Leo - can you sticky this thread? You are absolutely right. Nobody even knows why you can't climb here. Even the people that work there. It's silly.

I would love being able to climb here, as it is only about 4 miles from my house. I am also up to any volunteer things that might help gain access and/or maintain it.
