I'm going to be spending a day or two around Bend, OR with my two kids and looking for a place to do a little bouldering. If anyone has any suggestions for a decent spot with an easy/moderate approach and a scenic area for the kids to hang out and look for insects, it would be much appreciated. Any other suggestions for things to do in or around Bend (and a good place to camp) would be mighty helpful as well. Thanks!
All sorts of great bouldering in that region, fitting the bill for "scenic area for the kids to hang out and look for insects" -
Meadow Camp immediately comes to mind. Bouldering there is great. Short top-roping (or tall bouldering/soloing depending on how you look at it). The place can even be great for teaching introductory gear.
If bouldering is what your after you'll want to start at the back and come back to the car. Some of the better stand-alone boulders, not involved with the cliff backdrop can be found furthest from the car lot. Lots of good traverses, and non-topping problems on cliff-band as well.
Widgi is great (real close to meadow camp), but MC has the river running tight to the area, can be the more scenic spot if that trumps quality of problems.
Sisters is a part of my every year for bouldering. Its a great spot for kids, only lacking the river that comes with MC.
I've heard good things about the Depot, but to the best of my knowledge it is not legally accessed currently.
If you want to get away from all that sharp basalt and tuft bouldering come on over to the other side of the cascades and boulder at the Druid Stones!
