So I've got a #4.5 Camp "Air Cam" that I've had for a while. I bought it several months ago mainly because I was on some random website and I saw that it was being sold new for 40 bucks, so I ordered it. Since then I've climbed on it several times, never fallen on it, but last weekend my friend was hanging on it and he yelled down to me that the wire broke. He was still able to clean the piece, but I retired the piece, figuring it isn't good to climb on a cam with a broken wire (the actual wire isn't broken, it just pulled out of the little thing that is connected to the lobe).
So I'm wondering if these cams are legit. What is odd is that I've looked all over camp's website for these things and I cannot find them on the website! What's more strange is that I was talking to another climber last weekend about the air cams after he saw it on my rack and told me that these things are all they climb with in China. He was under the impression that Camp doesn't even make cams and all the "Air Cams" are just knock offs. Has anybody ever climbed with them or know where they come from, and most importantly, are they a legitimate, safe cam?
I have several air cams and have had no problem with them, action is smooth and they seem to fill the gap between my other various cam makes, like John said they are no longer in production, I bought mine several years ago from their outlet store. You could call them at (303) 465-9429, maybe they can fill you in on where they were made amd maybe address the wire problem that you had.
If it's just the trigger wire that's broken, that is replacable. Even if you can't find a trigger kit for it, use weed wacker cord, its strong and super durable...
