Daisy Chains

Daisy chains are too expensive to justify a purchase for me. However, I have an extra ten feet of webbing. Can I tie myself a daisy chain to save some bank?

Sure you can. What are you using the daisy chain for?

Depending on what you use it for the webbing can be safer. The daisy chains can shock load systems and the tack bars can pop if not used right though.

Forget the daisey altogether unless you are aid climbing. They are an unnecessary piece of gear that doesn't belong on most climbs.

Hastings isn't to far from me. Cool. I use daisy chains sometimes though, even in the gunks. I get lazy sometimes and instead of clove hitching the rope to a cam when I get to the top and setting the anchor up, I tend to clip a bolt or rap anchor with my daisy chain. To each his own.

I appreciate a tether for extending raps and personal protection that doesn't monopolize the rope. To each his own

I use a PAs, but you can make a daisy by tying a sling out of the webbing and then putting in a series of overhand knots. It will actually probably be stronger than a store bought daisy.

Another slick trick is getting a 10 ft piece of 8mm cordalette, tying into your harness, clove hitching in a biner, and tying the free end to the cordallette with a double fisherman's. That way, you adjust by sliding the clove.

I think the ultimate in personal anchors is the Pursel Prussic. It has the adjustability of a daisy but the strength of a prussic.

To save some bank, go buy a $70 Duck ascender and a $10 double length 10mm runner. Girth hitch the runner through your harness and then through the duck and then to a biner. While you're at it, buy another set of cams... Wait, no, that is how I've been saving money... damnit!
