I was just wondering if anyone had been to the end of FR 687 recently and could provide an update on the driving conditions. Considering doing Moby Dick this weekend, and we are limited to a 2WD car for access. Sounds like this road is usually OK for cars, but thought it might be a good idea to doublecheck.
We did it in a 2wd van couple weeks back. Just pay attention and go SLOW. We got a flat on the way back. There's a couple real sharp rocks. Totally worth it, though, Moby Dick was really fun! Shouldn't be a problem as long as the driver is familiar with driving on rough 2wd roads.

Your flat tire could have been from a sharp piece of metal sticking up on one of the cow grates on Middlemarch--I think maybe it's the third one in from the paved road? The centerpiece of the grate has popped off its weld on one end and is slicing tires apparently.
Drive carefully over the grates and don't drive on the centerpiece at all.
Someone who felt like doing the community a service could use Mapki to get an exact fix on the problem grate, and save the coords and/or take a screenshot.
Thanks for the info. Good call on the cattle guard, I destroyed a tire driving up into the Chiricahuas a couple summers ago and always suspected one of the numerous battered cattle guard crossings was the culprit.
