Two climbing packs stolen from Summerlin (West Las Vegas) near Red Rocks

Big bummer. Our two climbing packs, with probably $3k++ worth of gear was stolen from the back of our vehicle near Red Rocks.

If you happen to see a rack with a BUNCH (nearly all of them) of red helium biners for sale, it is probably ours....

OUCH. That sucks, hard. I hope you get your stuff back, Andy!

I lost the same nut key I've been climbing with for 22 years.. Sniff.

Thanks for the offer Russ. We need the gear anyways, so I'm about to go make Desert Rock Sport's day....

Amazing partial recovery story!

A runner, 4 miles away, found the rack of hardware (cams, nuts, biners) thrown on the side of the road! He knew enough to recognize it as climbing gear and called the local climbing shop. So we got all that stuff back, yeah!

Still a big loss (rack of slings,draws,shoes,packs,harnesses,etc..)... but WAY better.

Would you mind sharing details of the loss? Was the vehicle locked? Where was it parked? Where there people around? Station wagon? In plain view or covered?

I'm on a long climbing trip myself (and in Red Rocks soon) and am always looking for hints as to how to keep my gear safe.

Stolen out of an unlocked trunk on a cul-da-sac in a gated community on the edge of Las Vegas (far end of West Charleston). 100% our dumb ass mistake not locking the trunk. And according to the locals, the thiefs hit the gated communities for exactly that reason... they figure people leave their cars unlocked.

I figure the rack being returned probably saved $1800 bucks, but it is AMAZING how fast the other stuff is adding up. Holy crap! Two ropes, slings, biners, shoes, jackets, parka, capiline, harnesses, chalk bags, all the little dudads (nut key, prussicks, knifes, headlamps, etc.)

Makes you realize this is an expensive sport!!!

If you are climbing at RR for the next week and see a guy with a million new carabiners and two clean new ropes. That's me.

I wish nothing but the worst for these disgusting perps. May they be bitten by brown recluses, pit vipers and suffer a head on collision with a semi while driving a Smart car. F em! Glad you got some of it back, however.

Wow. Props and great to hear. I was just going to tell you to check dumpsters/ditches/etc.

Most thieves are too stupid to know what to do with it.

On the one hand, it's a good excuse to buy a shit load of new gear. Gotta look on the bright side. And the guy who stole it will probably OD on meth by Christmas, no worries.

I have a couple friends that own a house in that community. They've had friends' unlocked cars ransacked; one unlucky fellow lost a couple thousand dollars worth of camera equipment. It's a major problem out in those neighborhoods.

Glad you got most of your hardware back!

Whenever I am in Vegas I stay with my inlaws who live in a nice gated community in Summerlin.

Last time I was there some POS thieves smashed in the window on my nieces beater car and stole 3 CDs.

I'll be sure to take all the gear into the house when I'm there next month.

I'm in the Summerlin area should you not want to drop 3 grand in Vegas...I have 2 70m ropes to lend, three pair of shoes, a couple harnesses, massive rack, packs...anything you need really! I'd just need it all back for some Sunday exploring! Drop me a line should you need something!

Thanks for the info, Andy. I will be staying with friends also in one of the gated communities near the park. One of them had a bike stolen from their deck--the next day it was on Craigslist. Needless to say, they got it back.

Sucks for sure, nobody here will say anything less than that. But the sun shined on Andy as his brand new FISH Doubleledge was left untouched.

Wheeeewwww!!!

Which is brighter.....the Luxor beam or Andy's new shiny rack?

Shiny rack and ropes indeed.

And they got nice and dirty today in Black Velvet... ;)

I am glad it sorta worked out for you Andy.

For the rest of the climbing community out there. If any body ever tells you that Vegas and its 1.6 million people are safe, they are the biggest clowns around, don't listen to them. Lock up everything all the time no matter what. If you watch this forum for more than one season you will see 4 or 5 posts exactly like Andy's.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, unless it is an STD, then you get to take it home!

I have a post on "gear stolen". Andy, I'll be calling you later tonight. For the rest of you, my e-mail is posted so use it or pass it to others who have been violated by thieves.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
