I don't do it because I want leave them alone during their season. The threat to them was mainly due to DDT; this is now past, unless there is some new chemical abounding the cliffs. There is a political side to this as the same with the Prebles. Preservationalists & surrounding private developments want people off "their" cliffs, out of "their" lands; they don't want to hear the belay communication catcalls; and/or see our visual impact. I don't ingress on our SPlatte Spires (the ones where they actually nest) during their time because I think the birds are a cool thing and I want to keep them a vibrant part of the SPlatte natural balance. I think leaving them alone helps in maintaining this. As far as a "species threat" -- if anything, climbers have helped the species recover more than any harm befallen them from the use of DDT by the high & mighty all knowing land mgrs.

We've actually fitted the falcons in the SPlatte with 50 cal & buckshot to enforce the nesting areas. In keeping with the balance of the area, this is quite normal.

About 7 years ago I accidentally violated the bird closure on Red Garden Wall in Eldo. I was new to climbing in Eldo and was unaware of the closures. We also didnt see any signs indicating where the cliff was closed. About half way up P3 of Ant Hill Direct we heard a large megaphone say something. We looked down across the river and saw a rangers SUV pointed right at us. It was hard to understand what they were saying b/c of the echo through the canyon. Eventually, we figured they were saying that the route was closed. We did two make-shift raps back to the ground, grabbed our gear and ran back to the car w/o ever encountering a ranger. Although there was no fine, Im sure we were very annoying to all the other climbers in the park (Im sorry if you were there that day). I think that disrupting other peoples climbing day was worse then paying a small fine.
