Just wanted to let everyone on this site know that the 2nd annual Lake City Ice Festival will be held on February 28th. More details can be found at lakecityiceclimbs.com. There will be timed top-rope and lead events. Entry is $15, and things get started at noon (sign in starts at 10 a.m.). There will be some great prizes, like a dry rope, express screws, quick draws, etc.

Later that evening, we will be having a dinner and beers at the Black Crooke Theater at 3rd and Silver. There will also be a movie and some music.

Feel free to contact me with questions.

I encourage folks to come to the Ice Festival, especially if they have not been to Lake City before. The locals are all really welcoming and the first festival last year was a blast.

I have added it to the list of upcoming events, but it would be cool if the admins added it to the "Climbing News" section at the top of the home page.

One more thing. It seems that motel rates are a deterrent for some folks attending. We don't want that to be the case. We have a free indoor alternative for those that would come to the festival if lodging were free. Email me for details if you are interested.

I have thought about checking out Lake City numerous times this year but the motels are proud of their rooms with the rates they charge. I am living over in Ouray and have heard more than a few people mention the ridiculous rates over there. Wish I could make it there this weekend but am down south enjoying some nice rock climbing. Good luck with the fest.

Matt-

I am with you on the motel room rates. Lake City lodging folks have not figured out the what Ouray has - lower rates in winter = more new winter visitors.

That having been said I find the lack of crowds and mellow scene make it worth my time and money. I hope you get a chance to to climb over there sometime. I suspect you would meet some cool local folks and that the room rate issue would disappear. At the very least I am sure you could get someone from Lake City to do a couch surfing exchange with you in Ouray.

Have fun on the warm rock. We will miss you on the (probably) melting ice.

How about the campgrounds are any of them still open? What about access, how are the roads getting to them and back? Subaru doesn't have the ground clearance like a 4runner or truck, etc... Thanks for the info.

You can basically stumble out of the Mocha Moose and rope up at the park!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
