I was up there yesterday, we were in the sun until about 2:30 or so but if you are doing the Maelstrom you will probably have a bit more sun. We hiked up the cynical way and down sunshine, not sure what's better but I'm leaning towards cynical. Have fun, be safe.

What needs to be said, Do the "Half Step Boogy" and get there early! A detailed trip report is required upon completion of assignment.

half step, etc are fairly east facing, get great sun, and are pretty protected from the wind. half step is definitely a mega route of pure fantasticness. maelstrom is more south facing and gets good sun from later in the morning to afternoon, but is more exposed to wind. best approach is from cyn pin side, although it goes either way. don't expect an access fund trail. have fun and let us know what and how you do!

Do them both! Mississippi is a better warmup even though it's harder. Bring lots of small stuff ( 3 blue aliens or equiv) for the Edge. While technically easier it is really thin and sustained. Have fun and maybe we'll see you up there if you go tomorrow. Up the Cyn Pin and down the Sunshine seems like the easiest on the knees....

Miss halfstep is a killer route. Kinda short for the long walk in but worth it.

totally bitchin, thanks for the convincing words about the "half step boogey" The crunch time for the spires is ON! I'm really torn, I'm really close to sending that beast the equinox but can't stop thinking about the dance mooooves of the mississippi CHEEERS TO THE THE SPIRES!!!!!!

Gosh, I miss that place! it was great up there. we approached from sunshine, (i really hate the trail to cynical). got on the half step, well the right hand variation to the first pitch which i thought has great. I got to lead the second pitch, took two falls at the crux, but figured out the moves and cruised the hands to the top. absolutely great route. spent the rest of the day doing single pitch stuff around sunshine, it got windy in the afternoon so staying close to the ground was nice. heading back to the poe on tuesday to fire the halfstep and hopefully climb the edge of freight too. thanks for everyone's info, and kevin if you read this, what were you guys checking out that day, looked pretty cool.

monty, were you up there on saturday? if so, was there any snow from the night before (friday night)? we were going to do the maelstrom on saturday, but there was some snow on the front range friday night and we didn't want to crawl up a wet chimney. i ended up doing queerbait yesterday, and everything seemed really dry.

The seam right of Rip Van Winkle is still a project, but I hope to change that this week. It's a bit scary at the crux roofs, as you can't reach the crack or hang out to place pro for about 10 feet. Tentative name is Wrinkle in Time and I guess it will go at 5.12+.
