Lone Peak Water / Conditions

Everything is getting in the way of my Lone Peak trip! It looks like I will be going in mid August. How much snow is still up there? Does it look like there will be some water left in mid August?

We will be going up Big Willow Canyon and hitting that wall and then on to the Lone Peak Cirque on a Fri/Sat. I know that Big Willow has a fairly consistent creek that we could use to fill up before making it to the Lone Peak Cirque, but I am not sure how high it goes. I have only been about half way up the canyon. We also thought of hiking (without our packs!) down to the meadow to get some agua out of that river, if there's any left. Any thoughts?...

If you were in Co. you'd better be sure you've got something to combat those little giardia bugs. Is it the same in Utah?

Well the general practice is to use a filter, but with that said I have drank plenty of runoff in a pinch. Although I would never do that somewhere that is not a semi-alpine environment or that I didn't know what snow pack it came from...

the mult-canyon climbing/backpacking/camping trips is one of my favorite things about the Wasatch. I've found plenty of water in august, great idea...and you may encounter less people than in the Wind Rivers!...doing the Big Willow to Lone Peak or Bells Canyon to BW to Lone Peak Cirque. It's a great idea....do it!

I'll be up there this weekend -- will let ya know when I get back. I'm counting on there being some snow up there, though...

There's still quite a bit of snow up there -- that snowfield running from the summit wall still extends all the way to the back of the cirque.

It's definitely going fast though -- must've been at least 85 up there on Saturday. I'd give it two or three more weeks.

Thanks for the info. I was up at Cecret Lake saturday night and there were only patches of snow left. Hopefully I can get out soon!!!

I have never seen so much snow and water up in the cirque, you should have no problems

You will find quite a bit of water in the cirque. You might have to walk ten minutes down to get at it but there is snow in the cirque.
Also you might consider carrying wag bags for your poo in the cirque. I know that a lot of people don't go up there, but the evidence is there that we are creating an impact in the area. Wag bags are a simple easy way to cut down on our impact. I will be up there tomorrow (Tuesday) and will be carrying wag bags for my use. It is such a beautiful majestic place. I have started to realize that it is up to us as climbers to keep it that way.

thanks for the timely post, dallen! indeed, the cirque is deserving of our very best efforts to keep it as pristine as possible, and i agree that wag bag use is the very least we can do to ensure that it remains every bit as majestic as the first time we set foot there. i'll have extra wag bags with me there this weekend, so for all those who make it up, please don't hesitate to ask me! shingo

Agreed. The offer to pack up some extra WAG bags is nice, but an offer to carry them down would be even better!

yay for wag bags! I used one at LPC just last week and it was lovely. Give your used bags back to mountainsense as they are his main source of diet. You hear that mountainsense EAT SHIT!!!
