Hello, I am trying to escape the cold and rain here in Portland for a three day weekend starting Nov29. We prefer overhanging single pitch sport, but are up for most styles. I hear there are a few limestone cave in the area? Any of your suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks. -Ryan
Ryan, Right now, the Trinity Aretes are in the shade all day and pretty cold. If we get any rain at all this week they will be done for a while. Cecilville and Marble Caves should be prime for steep limestone right now. There is a guide book available in Arcata and Eureka but I'm not sure if you can get it in Shasta. Marble caves has Euro quality limestone with routes from 10+ to 13. The cliffs face southwest and offer shirt sleeve climbing this time of year.
Ryan, If your looking for dry Limestone, you should have a look at Hells Canyon Idaho. It's about 6 hours east of you on I-84 North of Baker City. Should be nice no matter what. Dave
Trinity Aretes for sure. The place is great, and it really doesn't look like many people go there. However, I am not sure what the weather would be like this time of year, cold? Try and get your hands on the Big Foot Country climbing guide. If your the same Ryan that I think you are, ask Phil about it. I showed him the guide book this past weekend and he seemed pretty excited about the area.
