Description Suggest change

A blue-grey tuff formation above Tidbits creek, on the lower slopes of Buck Mountain, on Forest Service land. The crag is deep in maple groves and old-growth fir. We’re circulating this info as a way to thank those who supported new routing. Sport development began here in May 2023, with a community effort involving 10+ route developers, 30+ volunteers, and over 70 donations from generous community members to support high quality, long-lasting hardware.

  • Active Development and Safety: The crag is a work in progress and we are developing and cleaning often. IF YOU CAN'T IDENTIFY A ROUTE, PLEASE DON'T GET ON IT. Please respect closed projects, which may have incomplete bolting or cleaning, uncured glueins, and are not generally red-tagged. Be aware, especially as you pass the Burning Ship wall and K-Wall: Trundled rock can and does land on the trail. Make your presence known. Bring a Helmet.
  • Topo link: Information on the routes was first circulated as a google doc, which may be more up-to-date and complete than MP.
  • Stashed gear, Fixed lines, and Theft: Around Feb 2024, community developing gear was stolen. Someone rapped a 5 pitch route and several sport projects left of the Rift, removing fixed lines, directional gear, and fixed sport anchors. We try to minimize visual and environmental impacts, but this is hard work requiring heavy tools and you may be climbing around lines if you're here early in the process. Feel free to borrow stashed tools for the day to help, but make sure to put them back, and please let us know if you have any leads on the gear. Around the same time, gear was also systematically stolen from Deathball.
  • LNT Ethics: Pack out all trash, try to stay on trail or in the wash, and brush tick marks when done.
  • Trad vs. Sport: There aren’t many continuous crack systems. Consider that small gear can damage the rock.
  • Hardware: All new sport routes should be developed with stainless (316L) glue-in bolts for strength and longevity. If you’re not familiar with placing these then get in touch.
  • Mosseneering: This is a temperate rain-forest and the moss is always reclaiming the rock. Please use brushes, blowers, chalk, and even baking soda to help keep the routes clean. Please DO NOT USE WIRE BRUSHES on holds that are already clean, as it can damage the rock and remove patina, leading to continued erosion.
  • Feedback: The grades are relative to the rest of the crag and exist only for orienting yourself and deciding what to climb. Please do not compare them to Smith or anywhere else, and keep your feedback constructive.

Getting There Suggest change

Park: 44°14'07.2"N 122°16'59.4"W.

1hr drive from Springfield, 20 min hike.

Creek Crossing: Follow a faint trail, and look for a place to cross the creek just upstream of the parking. You can check water levels a few miles downstream

(this gauge reads a few feet deeper than the crossing, if it reads below ~3’ (May-Oct typically) you can probably cross on rocks without getting your feet wet.) Poles recommended.

After crossing, go up to the south, following the tributary creek bed for ~2 min, until a trail appears on the east slope (left side) of the canyon, side-hilling and then switch-backing through old-growth. This eventually (15 min) crosses the creek again, at which point the Burning Ship wall is visible. Continue up the drainage and a switchback right to reach the K-wall and the Rift.

Take care accessing the base of certain routes. Ideally, fixed lines will be in place (like at the Moondial) where the scrambling is more serious, but this may not be an option with recent theft.
