Description

Rodeo Flat is the first part of the Kern Plateau encountered after driving up the big hill (AKA "Five Mile") from Kennedy Meadows. It is bounded by a long north/south ridge on the east, and Fish Creek on the west. Across on the west side of Fish Creek is Mohogany Flat. Fish Creek for the most part meanders through the flats, but near the south end it has cut a miniature gorge on its way down to join the South Fork of the Kern River in Rockhouse Basin. Up at the north end of the flat the highway crosses the Jackass Creek/Fish Creek confluence to skirt the north end of Mohogany flat on its way on toward Troy Meadow. Fish Rock is in the Fish Creek gorge in between the flats and Troy Meadow.

The Rodeo subarea includes five crag venues. "Rodeo", "Fish and Games", and "Quality Cliff" are down in the Fish Creek mini gorge. "Dark Crown" and "Bite Size" are above Rodeo flat, high on the east boundary ridge. I have provided a map image showing the layout.

Getting There

From Socal, the by far fastest way to Rodeo Flat is going up the Nine Mile Road to Kennedy Meadows, and on up - it is about 5 to 7 miles up from the Kennedy Meadows Store. For the parking areas it is best to study the map image and keep track of odometer readings. Or use Lat/Long coordinates which are provided.

Nine Mile Road, the first 9 miles of Sherman Pass Road from the I-395 to the "Top of Nine Mile", is not that dreadful (I seasonally live in Kennedy Meadows). But there is a very narrow blind corner section about midway up, just go slow and carefully through it as that will give you leeway on the car that is speeding the other way.
