Kamnik Rock Climbing

Kamnik sits at the mouth of the Kamniška Bistrica valley, a medieval town on the Gorenjska plain that serves as a hub for a whole spread of crags rather than a single destination wall. It's about 30 minutes north of Ljubljana, and less than an hour to other popular climbing areas like Bled and Celje, so it serves as a practical base for everything from roadside sport to big alpine north faces.

There are around ten sport climbing areas in the Kamniška Bistrica valley and its surroundings, with more than 400 routes between them, plus thirteen alpine climbing destinations in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps offering 50-plus routes. The valley also holds more than 170 boulder problems, one of the larger bouldering areas in Slovenia, with plenty of unclimbed potential still hidden in the forests. Most of the rock is limestone, sensibly bolted, with a long season running from spring through autumn.

If longer routes are more your jam, the bolted multipitch routes on Veliki Vrh's southwest face offer a dozen-plus well-protected lines, ideal for an easy day or a first multipitch lead, while Veliki Greben gives a long, exposed ridge in near-guaranteed solitude. Storžič (2,132 m) anchors the western end, with Kramarjeva grapa on its north face serving as classic preparation for bigger objectives.

The Kamnik Alps are the easternmost limestone group of the Southern Alps, steep and rugged, with near-vertical north walls and far gentler southern slopes. Grintovec tops out at 2,558 m, some 1,900 m above the valley floor, and the hard climbing sits on the north faces of Grintovec, Skuta and Dolgi Hrbet. The full ridge traverse from Kočna across to Ojstrica is the classic big outing.
