Description
Founder’s Rock is a boulder made of highly featured volcanic rhyolite similar to that of Indian Rock or Mortar, but less sharp and far juggier. There are five good climbs on this boulder, all moderate and ranging from slab to vertical to very slightly overhung on good holds. I recently cleaned these climbs fairly conservatively, brushing dirt, moss, and leaves, from just the hand and footholds of these climbs to make them go but not to ruin the prettiness of the moss. It sits in the shade off a couple of oak trees and has an excellent, flat landing, with a really easy walkoff down the back of the boulder. I am almost surely not the true first ascensionist of any of these climbs, and I would love any good info on history of climbing here to put it up. I think this would probably the best legitimately moderate bouldering that isn’t remotely scary in Berkeley, if only it got some traffic from climbers.
Getting There
Founders Rock is on the UC Berkeley Campus on the corner of Hearst Avenue and Gayley Road, pretty much across the street from UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre. During concerts at the Greek you can hear music while climbing. The boulder is obvious and visible from the road. It can also be found on any maps apps if you look up “Founders Rock.” Parking on the street can be difficult but you might be able to nab a spot in the garage across the street.
