Description

A small area with high quality problems in good density. Some of the boulders here are gems. In a wet season a stream runs amongst the boulders adding to the ambiance of large trees.

Note, the East parking (36.5278299, -106.1574169) has had road conflict issues in the past. The road is recognized as a public access road but there are obstacle detours. A lower clearance vehicle will be challenged by these. Additionally, if there is some consistent precipitation the last section often has some muddy sections that can persist. As often is the recommendation for the Ortega’s, an off-road capable vehicle is the best for this access.

The West parking (36.5206426, -106.1682316) provides an alternative access option. You will have an opportunity for additional fitness with this option.

Getting There

Recommended road map provided in pictures. The approach road to the West avoids potential conflict with the small community to the East. The full drive to the East parking sets you up for a flatter approach. West parking is a steeper hike into the valley but less driving. Generally the road is of better condition than other areas.
