Description
Rumor has it sweet Judith still visits this small "cirque" twice a year to bless it's glowing waters and handful of fun and peaceful rock climbs. The major area is Judith West, but there are small crags scattered all around these holy waters.
Getting There
If you start from H Lake Public Access, head southwest on a loosely defined trail. Judith Pond is the first lake (pond) after about a 1/4-mile hike. If you are heading to Ancient Lakes Coulee, follow the trail and go further west.
The Quincy Lakes road (the one that provides access via H-Lake and runs just east of the Coulee) is closed from Oct 1 - Jan 1, annually, so this will require hiking in from the parking lot just north of the Ancient Lakes Trailhead! (adds about a mile to the approach to both Judiths, and ALC!)
The Lore of Sweet Judith
Judith was not known as a gentle lady. She did not go quietly into the dark, but rather, she raged into the roaring waters of the great Missoula glacial outburst floods to create a home at a pond named in her honor. She lived a life of subtle "jude"ilation and often said with a smirk. When she wasn't adopting feral marmots (which was not well received by her friends or alpine rodents alike...), she was an avid kayaker on her pond. Even in the early 30's, when she pioneered this ancient way of life, her pond was not particularly large. But that did not stop her from freeking lapping that b*sh. If one listens just right, one can still hear the marmots calling out her name - "Juuuude, Judddee" Juude" !
Every year, there is a celebration of Judes' life, known as "June at Judith's." Folks come from far and wide to live the life and follow in the footsteps of our pioneer women... Burning one's hair clean off in Judith's sweet, agrochemically errant waters, climbing between the columns, and calling out with a primal shriek. Followed by a ritual toss of a tube of bright red lipstick deep into the cirque, as an ode to our matriarch and visionary woman of the pond. Sweet Jude lives on.
