Description
This remote cliff has some of the best limestone in Northern California, topping even Cecilville Bluffs. Unfortunately, its remoteness has caused it to instantly fade away after it’s first few visits... despite world-class quality. The cliff is perched up the hill across the river from the Fly Froggie Wall, visible from Cecilville Bluffs. There is potential for around 60 new, would-be classic routes on perfect stone up to 250’ tall. The potential routes would range from 5.10-5.14. A rebolting of the current RB routes would be a great start to resurrecting this magnificent cliff. Additional route development will eventually bring people out to see the sea of excellent stone. If you wander up there, you’ll be rewarded with excellent rock, a rousing potential for new routes, and surely several memorable adventures!
Getting There
Approach: The main obstacle to the Fortess is the river crossing. The original crew made a lucky log crossing and rigged a tyrolean from near the base of the Fly Froggie Wall. Unfortunately, local kayakers viewed the line as a nuisance and cut it down. We found the water to be low enough in the fall to walk across the shallows just upstream of the Fly Froggie Wall. If attempting to go in the spring, crossing in the same spot in a small raft should be successful. Once across, it is a 35-minute hike to the base. Look carefully for an old trail headding west. Soon after it turns up the hill, passing along the right side of a large mossy boulder field.
