Description
The Kingston Range is a remote region, with primarily granitic rock. I've been unable to find any record of climbing in the region until 2024. The area is however fairly popular for rock hounding (primarily amethyst) and there is a mining presence.
There is an abundance of wildlife such as big horn sheep, roadrunners, quail, coyotes, bobcats and much more. It is also home to the only grove of Giant Nolina in the Eastern Mohave, one of three stands of white fir trees in the CA desert, and one of the densest concentrations of Joshua Trees. Take care while you're in the area to help protect it's natural beauty.
Just before the road cuts through the mountains, there is a BLM bathroom and free campground.
Getting There
If you're in CA drive north on I-15, if you're in NV drive south. Eventually, in the most remote part of the highway make a turn at exit 272 for Cima Rd. Top off on gas and snacks if needed, at the Shell station, then drive north on Excelsior Mine Rd. for about 30 miles, and you'll be in the range.
