Description
The Tower of Babel is another Tanana River bluff with unique features that offer inspiration to rock climbers. There are several pillars, small roofs, overhangs, blank dihedrals and cracks ranging from finger laybacks to wide chimneys. The terrain that is most suitable for climbing ranges from 50-90ft. Because this bluff is situated above the river, most climbs will need to be accessed by rappelling. Though several bolt anchors already exist, they must be accessed via handline or a short 20-30ft rappel on young aspen trees. Until a permanent rappel anchor can be put on the saddle, temporary stations should be treated as suspect and inspected every season.
Getting There
Hike the bluffs trail from Birch lake. The Tower of Babel is located approximately 1/2 mile West (walking distance) of the Pandemic area. There is no designated trail yet, so one will have to bushwhack along the hillside. Cut south down the hillside to the Tower of Babel, which is roughly 75m up river from the Phase 2 bluff.
