Description Suggest change

Somewhat of an urban legend in the local climbing community, this tectonic mound offers some of the best bouldering in the southern part of Payahuunadu!

Surrounded by mineshafts, makeshift shooting ranges, remnants of old settlements, and continually getting buzzed by naval aviators from Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. The Haystack has a pretty wild west vibe to say the least. Some of the best pebble wrestlers that have trodden these parts, at one time or another, have paid homage to this unique never ending hillside of monolithic blocks. This has lead to the establishment of some proud lines up to V12, beckoning to be repeated and I’m sure more that have yet to be brought to life!

The area is quite expansive and has lifetimes of potential. Alongside the seemingly never ending boulders, a handful of rope routes exist that can be a great change of pace from the nearby Alabama Hills.

Getting There Suggest change

From the north end of the town of Lone Pine, take Narrow Gauge Road east, passing the Owens River. When the road turns to dirt take the main right turn onto Low-Inyo Road and the Haystack will be on your left.
