Hogback
The Hogback drainage is home to a variety of sub alpine granite buttresses, spires, and domes in an ambient setting. It truly is one of the hinterlands of the Lone Pine area. The rock is on par with that of the Portal with endless splitter cracks and xenolith knobs-O- plenty! Historically, not much has been done on the lower flanks of this canyon, although Doug Robinson and Galen Rowell made a couple early ascents that have been lost to history. In recent years some work has been done on the impressive upper alpine buttresses and about a dozen routes have gone up at the entrance of the canyon.
Getting There
Take Whitney Portal Road from the town of Lone Pine all the way to the bottom of the switchbacks that would take you up to Whitney Portal. Just before starting up the switchbacks, Hogback Road will be on your right. Follow this dirt road downhill for about 2 miles until a smaller forest service road (Hogback Creek Road) will allow you to turn left, paralleling Hogback Creek back up the canyon(west). Follow this 3 miles and park at any of the pullouts towards the end of the road. This part of the drive is kind of exciting as it is pretty narrow through the pinyon (or pinon) pines and helps to have high clearance.
